Inequalities of Race and Ethnicity

Minorities  A group of people with physical or cultural traits different from those of the dominant group in the society.

What does this mean?  Distinctive physical or cultural characteristics that separate it from the majority  Dominated by the majority  Believed to be inferior by majority  Common sense of identity and loyalty  Majority decides who belongs

Race  People sharing certain inherited physical characteristics that are considered important within a society

Do you associate with a race?  What is the determining factor?  Skin color?  Hair?  Height?

Ethnicity Ethnic minority  Group identified by cultural, religious, or national characteristics Others?

Ethnocentrism  One more time……  Judging others in terms of one’s own cultural standards  Not just Americans…  Isolationist Asia

Racial and Ethnic Relations Assimilation  Blending or fusing of minority groups into dominant society  Members are given full participation in society Conflict  3 basic patters throughout history include genocide, population transfer, and subjugation

Racism  An extreme form of prejudice that assumes superiority of one group over others

Discrimination  Treating people differently based on ethnicity, race, religion, or culture  Examples:

Hate Crime  A criminal act motivated by prejudice

Stereotype  At distorted, exaggerated, or oversimplified image applied to a category of people
