The Five Paragraph Essay There are proper ways of writing essays. Most of time people write essays with no organization. In this lesson you will learn how to properly organize your writing so that when you write, it will be in the proper form and organized. Take Notes!

The 5 Paragraph Essay begins with a Topic Paragraph The Organization The 5 Paragraph Essay begins with a Topic Paragraph The Topic Paragraph begins with a sentence that tells what your essay is all about.

The Topic Sentence The Topic Sentence begins your essay. It states what you are going to talk about in the essay. It will begin with a catchy phrase that will make people want to read your essay. Ex. Use this:“ Bats are wonderful pets.” Not This: “ In this essay I am going to talk about bats”

Next: Three Support Statements These are three statements in the opening paragraph that support your topic sentence. The three statements list three things that you plan to say about your topic sentence. They will become the topic of your next three paragraphs. Example:

Sentence #1 – Bats make wonderful pets because they are very clean Sentence #1 – Bats make wonderful pets because they are very clean. Sentence #2 – Bats get a bad rap when it comes to how people think about them. Sentence #3 – Bats are good for the family because they eat mosquitoes, flies, and other pests.

The Second Paragraph The second paragraph begins with the FIRST supporting statement from the topic or introductory paragraph. PARAGRAPH TWO Example: Bats make wonderful pets because contrary to popular belief, they are very clean animals. Everyone thinks that bats are dirty because of the way they leave…..

Paragraph Three Paragraph THREE begins with the SECOND supporting statement that you listed in the Topic Paragraph. PARAGRAPH THREE Example: Bats get a “bad rap” when it comes to how people think about them. For instance, people think that all bats are going to drink your blood like vampires…..

Paragraph Four Ok, you guessed it. Paragraph Four begins with the THIRD supporting sentence in your topic paragraph. PARAGRAPH FOUR Example: Bats are good for the family because they eat flies, mosquitoes, and other pests that bother us in the summer time. In fact, it is said that bats can eat as many as 1,000 mosquitoes…

Paragraph Five Paragraph FIVE is your CONCLUSION paragraph. It restates the three previous topics you talked about it the preceding paragraphs and ends with a concluding sentence. Paragraph FIVE Example: “In conclusion, we have seen that bats make wonderful pets because they are very clean, they aren’t the mean creatures everyone thinks they are, and they eat pests in the garden. I think everyone should have a bat for a pet.”
