History Joseph Marcelo Estrada, a former movie actor, was elected president in 1998, pledging to help the poor and develop the country’s agricultural sector. In 1999 he announced plans to amend the constitution in order to remove protectionist provisions and attract more foreign investment.Late in 2000, Estrada’s presidency was buffeted by charges that he accepted millions of dollars in payoffs from illegal gambling operations. Although his support among the poor Filipino majority remained strong, many political, business, and church leaders called for him to resign. In Nov., 2000, Estrada was impeached by the house of representatives on charges of graft. Vice President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo was sworn in as Estrada’s successor.

Current Conflicts A state of emergency is in effect for the Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat provinces, as well as for Cotabato City in Mindanao. Travelers should expect heightened police activity and a significant military presence in these areas as well as restrictions that Philippine government officials may impose on travel in those areas.

Opinion One thing that I find interesting is how the Philippines aren’t wealthy country and there is poverty surrounding everyone. But they are so happy there and that is why a lot of people choose to stay there when given the chance to leave. One thing I don’t like is how there are terrorists out there disturbing the peace. For example, there are terrorist bombings that are costing innocent lives.

Opinion Cont. I would not like to live in the Philippines I think I would have too hard of a time adjusting to a whole new culture. But I would like to visit there one day. I have heard a lot of cool things about the Philippines from my friends in California. I would visit there but not live there.

Italy Location- Southern Europe Capital- Rome Languages- Italian, German, French, Slovene Population- 61,261,254 Religions- Roman Catholic, Judaism *Life Expectancy- 80

Italian Values and Beliefs Values- Traditional Italians are family driven. Family comes before everything. Beliefs- A lot of Italians are very superstitious. For example, they think the day Friday the 17 th is very unlucky. Some other things that they consider bad luck is, having the bread upside down, black cats, opening umbrellas in a house, walking under ladders, etc.

National Symbols

National Emblems National Anthem- (The Song of the Italians)Il Canto degli Italiani National Bird- BlueBird National Flower- White Poppy

History Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II.

Current Conflicts There are no current conflicts in Italy.

Opinion One thing I find interesting is how Italy is not a modernized country but it attracts a lot of tourists. One thing I don’t like is whenever I travel there one day, I have to at least start learning a new language to get the full experience.

Opinion cont. I wouldn’t mind living in Italy, it is completely different from the United States but I would be willing to learn to adjust for this country.

Overall Opinion I am a person that does not like change. Even though I have moved a lot in my life, I don’t like change. But I learn to adapt quicker than most people. So that is why I would say I wouldn’t mind living in another country. I love the United States but I believe there is more out there. If I could choose somewhere to live I would choose Italy. I think Italy is a beautiful country. When I get older I wouldn’t mind retiring there because it’s very peaceful.
