HS Directory Cover Your Challenge: Design the Front and Back Cover of the Directory of the NYC Public High Schools.

HS Directory Cover 1. Using Images: With respect to the images in your design, the more creative and unique you are, the better. Here are some things to keep in mind: A. No Copyrighted images. B. Inclusiveness: Designs should be appropriate for all ethnicities, ages, genders and boroughs. Overall your design should feel inclusive to all residents in the City of New York.

HS Directory Cover C. School-Based Images: We encourage the use of school- based imagery in the directory designs. It’s fine to incorporate other New York City imagery (subways, taxis, apples, buildings, etc.), but such imagery should be tied to the concepts of education, learning and growing up. D. Reproduction: Keep in mind that designs must be easy to reproduce in different colors and sizes and with different text. How easily your design can be adapted to different media (publications, flyers, t-shirts, bags, CDs, etc.) and reproduced on different quality printers will be an important factor for the judges.

HS Directory Cover What are the judging criteria? Designs will be judged on the following four criteria: 1. Originality 2. Application of the principles of design 3. How adaptable the design is to different media (bags, t- shirts, CDs, etc.) 4. How well the design will interact with the text

HS Directory Cover Where can I go for inspiration? Check out the following resources for more information about graphic design and book cover design: The Book Design Review: An Archive of Book Cover Design & Designers: American Institute of Graphic Arts: Chermayeff & Geismar: Print Magazine:

HS Directory Cover TODAY: Finish Your Sketches. Continue to research online and come up with 3 sketches for the FRONT and BACK cover. You will be submitting both a front and back cover. Size: 8.5” x 11” (front and back)
