Areas to focus on in high school  Career Exploration  Becoming a serious student  Taking a challenging course load

10 Steps to High School Success 1.Understand your academic record Once you become a freshman all of your courses, grades and credits will be listed on your transcript. (see pink sheet) 2. Know your School Take the time to know the high schools attendance policy, athletic eligibility requirements, and school rules 3. Attendance! An absence is an absence is an absence Students in grades 9-12 may be denied course credit if they are absent from class for more than 28 days All absences count towards the total 28 days

4. Know how to get good grades Be organized Manage your time Take good notes Use test taking strategies 5. Set Goals Having a goal helps you stay focused and also helps you determine a plan of action. If for example your goal is to go to college, then there are specific things you must do in order to achieve this goal. 6. Make Good Choices and Decisions Make your choices carefully and make sure they are consistent with your values and your goals

7. Get involved…feel connected to your school! Try something new (sports, clubs, plays, etc.) Meet new people –see list that you received 8. Know how to handle stress and.. 9. Use Available Services Counselors, principals, tutors, teachers Teachers available after school 9 th period 10. Plan and prepare for your future In order to prepare for your future, it is important that you get the best education you can Choose your high school courses carefully

4 year planning  Development of a 4 year plan begins tonight as you choose your courses for next year. (see enclosure)  Plan is adjusted each year in individual planning meetings with students and counselors  Plan includes career goals, diploma status, post-secondary education goals  Counselors will continue to stress the importance of leaving as many options open as possible.

TWO YEAR COLLEGE TECHNICAL OR VOCATIONAL TRAINING There is a school or program beyond high school for every interested student. Two year colleges can you earn you an associate’s degree or it may be a stepping stone to a 4-year college. Most 2-year colleges have university parallel programs or transfer agreements with 4-year schools.

Four Year College  Colleges show a preference for students with as much Math and Science as possible. In Math this would be Integrated Algebra, Geometry and Algebra2/Trigonomety. Science courses would be Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.  Language requirements vary from college to college, but it is in a student’s best interest to have 3 years of a foreign language.  Students should keep a full schedule throughout all 4 years of high school. This will maintain proper study habits and help students cope with the amount of work connected with college.
