Streven’s (1988) splits ESP into two groups of characteristics Absolute characteristics: Designed to meet specified needs of the learner Related in content to particular disciplines, occupations and activities Centred on language appropriate to those activities in syntax, lexis, discourse etc. In contrast with General English

Variable characteristics: May be restricted as to the learning skills to be learned May not be taught to any set methodology
