Childsmile Nursery Toothbrushing Programme

Prevention Fluoride toothpaste can help to strengthen teeth and prevent dental decay along with choosing tooth friendly snacks Teeth should be brushed twice daily using a Fluoride toothpaste containing 1,000ppm fluoride. Supervise toothbrushing up to 7 years A pea sized amount of toothpaste should be used for children 3-6yrs or thin smear 0-2yrs Use a dry tooth brush Spit don’t Rinse technique Visit your dentist at least once a year Reduce intake & frequency of sugar “keep to meal times” Choose tooth friendly foods for snacks

Pre 5 Nutrition Promote a balanced diet incorporating 4 of the 5 main food groups – remember food high in fat and or sugar are not an essential food group for pre 5 Fruit and vegetables Bread, rice, potatoes and pasta Milk and dairy foods Meat, fish, eggs, beans Restrict foods containing sugar to meal times – always read the labels. Plain milk & water are the only recommended drink between meals.

What is Childsmile Childsmile Childsmile is a national programme designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland and increase access to dental services. It is funded by the Scottish Government and has four main components: Childsmile Core Childsmile Practice Childsmile Nursery Childsmile School

Childsmile core programme Daily toothbrushing programme targeted all 3 & 4 year olds who attend nursery Children must have consent from parent or guardian. Rolling consent one TB consent roll through from nursery – school

National Standards For Toothbrushing Programme

Effective Preventive Practice Toothpaste should contain 1000ppm fluoride. Pea size amount of toothpaste is dispensed onto individual paper towel/tissue. Effective Preventive Practice Children are closely supervised during the toothbrushing routine. Children are discouraged from swallowing the toothpaste during or after toothbrushing (spit don’t rinse) After toothbrushing, toothbrushes are rinsed thoroughly with cold water and replaced on rack.
