Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles Second level Third level Fourth level Fifth level 1 VIPSI-2009 Belgrade Gyula Mester THE LISBON STRATEGY 2000 IN HIGHER EDUCATION OF EUROPE The conclusions of the European Council (Lisbon, March 2000) are well-known. They state the following: “Europe should become, by 2010, the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world, capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion“. The aim is to increase our universities’ contribution to the Lisbon Agenda for more growth, and more and better jobs. Europe has around 4000 higher education institutions, with over 17 million students and 1.5 million staff. All across Europe, countries and universities are in a process of modernization. From an EU perspective, these reforms are part of the Lisbon Strategy. OVERVIEW OF THE PRESENT SITUATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION According to the publication of the well known institution "Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University” the rank list of the top 20 Universiti- es in the world space of higher education in 2008 appears in the following way:
