Chapter 3 – Currents of Though and Cultural Expression History 404 – Mr. Wilson

WHAT IS “CULTURAL EXPRESSION?” (you might want to write this down…)

WHAT IS “MASS MEDIA?”

DO CERTAIN TYPES OF MEDIA WORK BETTER WITH CERTAIN TYPES OF EXPRESSION?

Look familiar?

In your Common-Place Books! Which culture is being expressed? Quebec or American? Explain… Which American idea is being satirized? Which form of Mass Media was used to distribute this clip? Which form of Mass Media is being criticized? Do all viewers realize this is satire? What traditions are shown in this clip?

In groups of TWO… Come up with a definition of the term “Capitalism” Then come up with a definition of the word “Consumerism”

Back to the Video! Give me an example of Capitalism from the clip. Give me an example of Consumerism. What is an “Americanism?” Are we not being just like the Americans by making fun of them? If the clip is criticizing American culture, how is it promoting Quebec culture through humour?
