Instruction Sets for Strangers – Initial Concepts MFA Design and Technology Major Studio : Interface Fall 2008 James Blake | Fiorella Yahui Gu| Amber Krishan

Context A very common topic of discussion amongst Parsons students is the plight of the US economy. It is an increasing cause for worry as students are not certain if they would be able to get jobs once they exit this program.

Project Goals Attract students to the installation Invite student to take part in the installation and effect change on it Cause for students to debate the visual depicted within the installation Make students sitting in various different location collect at one point and interact

Concept The installation would be an edible sculpture which would depict a scene from the wall street The Stay-Puft Marshmallow man (made of marshmallows) will be a giant monster depicting capitalism. The cupcake people representing the currency would be running away from the Stay-puft man as he would be trying to eat them. The audience would be invited to view and eat the sculpture, making a choice between the stay-puft marshmallow man and the cupcake people. This could symbolize wither if they support capitalism and eat the cupcakes or choose to save the economy and eat the stay-puft man.

Challenges Will the people eat the sculpture? Will they easily understand the underlying message? Will they discuss the peice with other?
