Palisades High School Professional Connection April 21, 2015

Jacqui Maguire, Senior Recruiter Charlie Young, Recruiter Molly Sigworth, Vice President, Talent Acquisition

Where to Start: The Resume and Cover Letter What to do with the Resume: Getting in the door The Interview: What to do once in the door Pursue local jobs with community exposure Internships, mentor relationships, job-shadowing, volunteer positions “Work Work” - putting the time in How to be an Awesome Employee

Curriculum Vitae: Latin for “Course of Life” A marketing document at its core It’s a teaser to get someone to call you Keep it to one page Ensure no typos or mistakes Don’t count on spellcheck to catch everything Always have a second set of eyes List your accomplishments There are a myriad of templates on the internet No colors - Black only please Be mindful of format and sending – always pdf Honesty is the only policy

Cover letters Always customize the letter for each position and company Acknowledge the company, location and job by name I am very excited to apply to be Justin Bieber’s tweeter in Calabasas. Show your personality and writing skills Highlight the big picture of your experience and goals as they relate to this position and company Keep it straight forward and to the point

I have an awesome resume – now what? The magic interweb has a crazy amount of job boards Craigslist, Indeed, Career builder, Stack overflow, and so much more Use your High School and College Career Center Make sure you are actually qualified (not just in your head) It’s ALWAYS better to somehow get your resume to the actual people who are hiring LinkedIn is a powerful tool for finding people Does the job posting say who this reports to? Find them

Your Network The fastest way to get in the door is if you have an “In” Start with your family - who do your parents / siblings / cousins / uncles know?! Continue on to Friends and Neighbors - Who do your friends (See above) know?! Meet-Ups - good chance to meet people who like what you like (and maybe have jobs for people who like what you like)

Interviewing: 101

The Interview Guide Interviews can be on the phone, via Skype or in-person There is no such thing as overdressed There is such a thing as underdressed Bring 3+ copies of your resume Show up early …not too early – never more than 10 minutes Always be positive about any previous experience Come prepared with questions to ask about the company and the position Ask for the job Reiterate your interest Follow-up with a brief Thank You to all those you met

High School Jobs

Start at the Beginning The goal is to gain experience… ANY experience Great starter jobs often involve customer service Attainable jobs can be found right in your community Leave your comfort zone Start perfecting a great work ethic Be on time, every day Commit to your schedule and realize it may conflict with your social schedule

College Jobs Go to your Career Center Internships become available Some paid Some unpaid Job v. Career experience Both have perks University positions Balance

Be an Awesome Employee

You are not going to be the CEO on Day One It’s okay that this is not your dream job ANY experience is good experience Start with the opportunity you are given and be the best at it What you like/don’t like about this part of your career will shape where you take the next 20 years “Work Work” – it’s called work for a reason Be an Awesome Employee

Rise Above the Rest: What does it take? Attitude is your strongest ally in a strong career trajectory Good enough is the enemy of a good work ethic Say yes… a lot Say no sometimes too Be early… too early is okay here Stay late Be flexible Don’t just smile- mean it Work harder than the people next to you

Thank You! Any Questions?
