To find the density 1- Find the mass of the object 2- Find the volume of the object 3- Divide Density = Mass Volume

Units for density g/cm 3 or g/ml Formula: M = mass V= volume D = density M = D x V V = M / D D = M / V

Lab Overview You will find the densities of oil and water. Supplies Graduated Cylinder, balance, oil, and water. Data Table ObjectMass (Object & Grad Cylinder) Volume Graduated Cylinder, 10mLN/A Graduated Cylinder, 50mLN/A Oil – 8mL Oil – 25mL Oil – 50mL Water – 8mL Water – 25mL Water – 50mL

Procedure 1.Record the mass of the graduated cylinders in the data table. 2.Measure out 8mL of water (record the exact amount in your data table). 3.Find the mass of the water (and the graduated cylinder). Water waste can be poured down the drain 4.Repeat steps 2-3 for 25mL and 50mL of water. 5.Repeat steps 2-3 for 8mL, 25mL, and 50mL of oil. Oil should be poured into the waste container 6.Calculate the masses of the water and oil for each volume by subtracting the mass of the graduated cylinder. Record this in the results table. 7.Calculate the density for each volume of water and the oil and record the densities in the results table. 8.Average the densities of the water; record in the results table. 9.Average the densities of the oil; record in the results table. 10.Calculate the percent error for the water if the known value is 1.00g/mL

Results WaterMass of substance Density of substance Average Density 8mL 25mL 40mL OilMass of substance Density of substance Average Density 8mL 25mL 40mL % error for water:

Post Lab Questions 1.Construct a graph for your data –Volume vs. density –Mass vs. density 2.Why does oil float on water? 3.Given the density of an unknown substance, would you be able to identity the substance? Why of why not? 4.Design an experiment to determine the density of an oddly shaped object. Be sure to include the following: hypothesis, detailed procedure, and sample data table. Your procedure should include several data points, therefore, also identify the independent and dependent variables and the constants in your experiment.
