English 10R Research Paper PowerPoints

English 10/May 15 (Wednesday) Aim: How do you begin your research papers? Do Now: *Go to your assigned computers with your research folders. Your jobs today: Type up a title page, Works Cited, and introductory paragraph. HW: * Research papers due Monday—hard copies in folder AND submitted to turnitin.com

Task 1: Create a title page Janie Smith Ms. Cerulli May 20, 2013 English 10R Guy Anderson:Proof that Good Guys do Exist! Original title (Your name) Ms. Cerulli Due date (May 20, 2013) English 10R

Task 2: Create a Works Cited Page: Works Cited “Guy Anderson.” The Ripper Webroom.June Klein, Matt. People Who Make the World a Better Place. Oklahoma: Yale Press, Quieros, Lisa. The Real Guy Anderson.” Reader’s Digest. New York: RD Publishers,2005. Ward, Adrian F. “Scientists Probe Human Nature—and Discover We Are Good, After All.” Scientific American. 20 November Web. (Alphabetize your entries)

Step 3: Write your introduction Many Americans today have comfortable homes filled with the latest technology has to offer, and they spend a lot time figuring how to amass more fancy possessions. But not Guy Anderson. Raised in a poverty-level household in hardscrabble Detroit, Anderson lived no man’s ideal life. Inspired by these early personal struggles, Anderson turned his attentions to helping improve the living conditions of others in his hometown. Many current psychologists and scientists posit that people, like Anderson, are wired to want to help their communities. Through his works with the A Home for Everyone Foundation, Guy Anderson is definitely an example a man who shows that, no matter how arduous the challenges, people really do strive to work for the benefit of the group.

Basically, follow what you planned out in your outlines: A.The first sentence or two should “grab” the audience, tell something about your topic that introduces it and makes the audience want to stay and read more B.Then write a statement about the first possibility (the one you think is likely true) C.Then write a statement about the second possibility D.End with a CLEAR THESIS (the sentence that explains what the paper will prove) DO NOT USE “I” IN THE PAPER.

Don’t forget to bring in your flash drive on Friday. Due Monday: * Hard copy of typed research paper, Works Cited, and folder with all past work. * Digital copy of paper sent to turnitin.com

English 10/May 16 (Thursday) Aim: How do you begin your body paragraphs? Do Now: * Go to your computers and log on. HW: * Research papers due Monday—hard copies in folder AND submitted to turnitin.com

Step 4: Write the body paragraphs. * Use your outlines as a guide * The paper should sound like YOU. Paraphrase all information into your own words but don’t forget to GIVE CREDIT to the source that taught you the information in the form of IN TEXT CITATIONS.

English 10/May 17 (Friday) conclusion Aim: How do you bring your research papers to a conclusion? Do Now: Get to your computers and get to work! HW: * Research papers due Monday—hard copies in folder AND submitted to turnitin.com

Finishing the paper Step 1: Make sure you are citing EVERY FACT (and that you are using your own wording) while you complete the three body paragraphs. Step 2: Write a conclusion. * Begin by restating your thesis in new words. * Summarize why the evidence supports your thesis * Go beyond—tell a lesson or something that can be learned from this Step 3: Proofread. Spell check. Grammar check. To be handed in Monday AND SENT TO TURNITIN.COM: * Typed title page * Typed research paper in 12 point font WITH in text citations * Typed Works Cited page * Entire research folder with all past work

Step 5: Writing the conclusion Guy Anderson is definitely a man who highlights the best in humankind. Despite an early life that included several bouts of homelessness, Anderson worked hard and became one of the country’s youngest ever multi- millionaires. Instead of holding on to the fortune, the humanitarian turned his good fortune into a windfall for the underprivileged of his native Detroit. He created the A Home for Everyone Foundation, rescuing over 2,500 families from the brink of poverty and offering them hope and homes. Anderson could have simply kept his wealth for himself, but from an early age, Anderson showed an affinity for helping others. Judging from Anderson’s interviews on his life today, the contributions he had made to his hometown seem to have brought him great happiness. It seems that Guy Anderson proves researchers Zak and Ward correct: helping our community bring us joy.
