Read P. 318

* After WWII people in America were ready to have goods they were not able to enjoy during wartime * In War factories must produce items for war * Now that war was over there was a change!!!

* With the war being over, and gasoline no longer being a scarce commodity (item) many Georgians fulfilled their dream of owning a car. * As a result suburban growth skyrocketed. * People could now work in the city and drive home. * Also there was a growth of Drive-ins, such as movies and restaurants.

* There are several reasons that farming began to decrease. * View the Chart on p.320 * The GI Bill-Congress provided benefits for returning soldiers * Four years of college, low interest home/farm/ business loans, and $20 a week in unemployment

* The GI Bill meant that there was a focus on development and family * College-means less farms! * Baby Boom!-Why were children born during this time period called baby boomers?

* Because there were so many children born during this era.

* Farm equipment and technology…. * Means we need less famers * This meant that there was a change in the type of farms that existed in Georgia * View Chart on p. 320

* Tenant farming declined after WWII * Many people moved to other states- many of these were black individuals in need of work and opportunity * However, there was also a rush of business that took place in Georgia

* Transportation hub of the south * Favorable weather * Workers were not unionized-means cheap labor * Low Taxes * All of these meant good things for business! * View Map on P. 321

* The origins and beginnings of the Cold War can technically be traced to 1945 following WWII with the words of George Orwell. * However in reality and in the public eye the cold war did not fully develop and establish itself until 1949.

* Many things occurred but mainly we see the emergence of nuclear testing by the Soviets. * The demonstration of nuclear power officially ends the American monopoly on atomic warfare and therefore, warfare and diplomacy is forever changed in 1949.

* America getting wind of this emergence essentially caused them to enter an arms race and both the Soviets and the US raced to establish a more powerful nuclear presence. * /Cold-War /Cold-War

* The arms race and military preparedness brought in giant businesses such as Martin- Marietta (leader in chemicals, aerospace, and electronics) employing thousands of Georgians. Military outposts also created thousands of jobs in places such as Dobbins, Warner Robins, and Fort Benning.

* Please complete the main ideas on p. 321 and 323 in Groups of 3 * Be able to answer these questions on a quiz * Also fully understand the Cold War, what it was, key details, how it started, and what it meant for the economy of Georgia.
