CHOICES: Maori Provider in Hastings

Decile Rating of 10, Social Deprivation Scale; majority of State Housing, High Unemployment

Industrial Area beside neighboring school, and limited social activities

Unsafe State Housing, Blocked Access over Crowded Conditions

Health status, health behaviours and risk factors; MOH The majority of New Zealanders report being in good health. High smoking rates persist in Māori adults and in adults living in the most deprived areas. Hazardous drinking rates and smoking rates are highest in young people. Adults and children living in the most deprived areas have higher rates of all health risks including smoking, hazardous drinking and obesity.

Maori Birth Rate Is on the increase Younger age at conception 17-25yrs Have more pregnancies in child bearing years Have higher rates of smoking in pregnancy 37% 100% of pregnant Maori women who smoke; Live in a household where others smoke

Most Maori Women know they are Pregnant by 7wks 70% have their pregnancy confirmed at a GP practice Often they are informed to give up smoking, but no assistance is offered If they are not supported to give up smoking, within 2 wks of pregnancy confirmation or in the first trimester they continue to smoke Most attempt to go COLD TURKEY without support and fail.

How can we support Maori pregnant Women to STOP SMOKING Promote smoke-free pregnancy to all women & Maori men of child-bearing age Confirming physician to intervene with NRT and Smoke-free referral Target the whole whanau
