NSS Information Kit 1 Integrated Science (S4-6)  Science for Citizenship

NSS Information Kit 2 Aim To develop in students a broad and sound knowledge base to meet the challenges of living in a technologically advanced society  For students taking only one science subject  Students taking this subject will be provided with a comprehensive and balanced learning experience in the different disciplines of science, and also be able to widen their horizons by taking up subjects from other Key Learning Areas (KLAs)

NSS Information Kit 3 How is it Different from Bio/Chem/Phy?  For students of diverse interest  Thematic approach based on contexts of daily relevance  A “toolkit” of ideas and skills which are useful for interpreting, assessing and responding to science issues encountered in everyday life

NSS Information Kit 4Features  Key ideas in science, e.g.  Conservation of energy  The chemical basis of life  Materials and their properties  Nature of science, e.g. ․ How scientists investigate the natural world ․ The uncertainty of all data – how to assess it and deal with it  Unifying concepts ․ A conceptual tool to help students see the overarching coherence in our understanding of the natural world

NSS Information Kit 5 Our planet EarthRadioactivity Electricity and magnetismForces and motion Conservation of energyConservation of matter Biological evolution Homeostasis and coordination The gene theory of inheritance Biodiversity and ecosystems The chemical basis of life Materials and their properties Chemical changeThe atomic world Scientific attitude Scientific thinking Scientific practice Scientific community Systems, order & organisation Change, constancy, evolution & equilibrium Evidence, models & explanation Form and function Unifying Concepts Nature of Science Key Ideas in Science Curriculum Framework

NSS Information Kit 6 Modules Compulsory Modules (24 hrs each):  Water for Living ( 生命之泉 )  Balance Within Our Body ( 體內平衡 )  Science in a Sprint ( 短跑科學 )  Chemical Patterns ( 化學世界中的規律 )  Electrical Enlightenment ( 電的啟迪 )  Balance in Nature ( 大自然中的平衡 )  Radiation and Us ( 輻射與我 )  From Genes to Life ( 基因與生命 ) Elective Modules (2 out of 3, 32 hrs each):  Energy, Weather and Air Quality ( 能量、天氣和空氣質素 )  Keeping Ourselves Healthy ( 持守健康 )  Chemistry for World Needs ( 化學為民 )

NSS Information Kit 7 What Benchmarking Agencies Said? UCLES (UK) WMIER (NZ)SLO (Netherlands)  Promotes scientific literacy  Thematic – interesting, relevant & with solid coherence  Very modern approach – subject specialists should find very little with which to disagree  Rigor – sufficient to stretch more able students CE Phy CE Chem CE Bio Inte Sci Nature of Science Unifying Concepts

NSS Information Kit 8 Coherence with other Disciplines English Language Mathematics Chinese Language Other Learning Experiences X1* X2* Integrated Science Issues in Liberal Studies The broad knowledge base and scientific thinking students developed will contribute to their exploration of contemporary issues in Liberal Studies *X1, X2 – elective subjects from other KLAs
