Malian refugees are met at the Mauritania border by the UNHCR and border police. By the beginning of June, 67,164 Malians had sought refuge from conflict and severe food shortages. LWF

On arrival ACT Alliance registers the new refugees, finds tents, helps them settle, even late on Friday night. Sometimes they come with luggage and animals, others arrive with nothing. LWF

18.5 million people are affected by the food crisis. The Sahel region covers from left: Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon (tip), Chad, Sudan and Eritrea.
