Shared Inquiry Great Books

Shared Inquiry is a discussion in which students discuss complex texts in order to deepen their understanding and develop new ideas together. Read pages ix- xvii in your book to learn the basics. What is Shared Inquiry?

Pre-reading discussion Write down this pre-reading question in the pre-reading box of your Inquiry Log: “What are some ways in which people can be equal or unequal to one another, and what can societies do to help people achieve equality?” Pre-reading discussion

In the First Reading box, write 3 questions In the First Reading box, write 3 questions. Aim for one of each of the types listed below: Interpretive Questions: get at the text’s deeper meaning and themes. They have more than one good answer that can be supported by the text. Ex: Why does Renate let Hanna try to cure her leg? Speculative Questions: ask about information that exists outside the text, but readers must use their imagination. Ex: Will Harrison’s parents ever think about their son again? Evaluative Questions: go beyond the text and call for the reader’s personal opinions. Ex: Should the mother have tried harder to send the narrator to the first school? Question Writing

Discussion Questions/ Second Reading Share your prepared questions in groups of 4. Write the top 2 questions from each group on the board. On p. 2 of your Inquiry Log, write down your favorite questions. During the second reading, pay attention to the questions and make notations in the text where you see possible answers. Choosing Focus Question As a class we will choose what we think are the most interesting questions from the class. These will become the focus questions in for the Shared Inquiry discussion.
