Observing Natural Resources Activity #12

Key Concepts You Will Learn Today One way to gather data is through observations. Accurate and complete observations are important for making conclusions about the natural world. Many of the materials used by people occur naturally on earth and are known as natural resources.

Key Vocabulary Natural resource – a naturally occurring substance on Earth that is useful. Renewable resource – a resource that is able to be replenished by natural processes. Examples: water, plants, animals. Examples? Non-renewable resource – a resource that cannot be replenished by natural processes. Example: fossil fuels. Examples?

Coal Carbon-based rock that comes from living organisms. Formed millions of years ago. Estimated that 56% of U.S. electricity comes from burning coal. ml ml

Garnet General term used to describe different reddish minerals. Form under pressure much like coal Relatively abundant on earth.

Fossilferous Limestone A sedimentary rock that has fossils in it. 50% calcium carbonate Formed millions of years ago from dead marine animals. Very abundant and found worldwide kids.html kids.html
