THE MISSION OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMIC SCIENCES AND MANAGEMENT We conduct academic research and educate following the newest theoretical and practical solutions considering the needs of the regional and global economies, and bring up our students to become people who are socially responsible and with broad horizons.

CONCEPT OF EDUCATION Management Programme realised at the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń The management programme at master level studies at the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management at Nicolaus Copernicus University is finished with the obtainment of a professional title of Master. The programme comprises four semesters of study, which corresponds to 120 ECTS points. The purpose of education within the management programme is to provide knowledge, skills, and social competences necessary for the obtainment of the degree in management. The field of study is confined in the area of ​​ social sciences, and education is realised in accordance with the university general teaching profile.

Learning outcomes that result from the scope of the knowledge include the following:  possessing in-depth knowledge of the nature and historical evolution of management science and its place in the system of social sciences;  understanding and considering, from the point of view of the relevant management sciences, economic and social processes taking place in institutions and their environment, as well as their global interdependence and long-term consequences;  knowledge and understanding, from the point of view relevant to management sciences, of relationships between institutions and their internal and external stakeholders and of how they shape these relationships following both ethical standards and corporate social responsibility rules as well as the development goals of the institution;  profound knowledge of selected legal, organizational, professional, and ethical systems and their regularities, nature, sources, along with their modifications and modes of action;  possessing proper knowledge about the behaviour of people in organizations at the individual, group and institutional levels;  knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of management of intellectual property and the concepts and principles of the protection of industrial property and copyright law;  knowledge of the general principles of the creation and development of forms of individual entrepreneurship through knowledge of management science.

Within the scope of skills, the major learning outcomes in the educational process realized at WNEiZ UMK in Toruń include the following:  knowledge of methods of forecasting of economic phenomena, the identification of problems that are associated with the practice of the functioning and development of the institution;  self-identifying of research and professional problems and seeking their solutions and anticipating the consequences of the concepts used;  possessing the skills necessary to prepare a master’s thesis in the field of management with the use of all available sources and research methods needed to solve a specific problem;  knowledge of the English language at the B2+ (the European Framework of Reference for Languages​​) and the ability to deliver speeches in English;  designing, analysing, and using modern and advanced methods and management techniques within a variety of research activities.

A graduate of WNEiZ UMK in Toruń possesses in the area of social competences the following qualities:  he/she understands the need for lifelong learning and the need for continuous improvement of professional and personal competences and has the skills that enable him/her to inspire others to do so;  he/she has the ability to interact and work in a larger or smaller group, adopting a variety of tasks to be performed, demonstrating leadership, communication skills, diligence and perseverance;  he/she is responsible for ensuring the safety and health at work for himself/herself and those in the professional environment, and acts adequately in emergency;  he/she is able to think and act in an entrepreneurial manner, satisfies the conditions of corporate social responsibility and of professional and life ethics.

The graduate of the management programme of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń is prepared for:  starting work in business entities and institutions of various levels of the national economy as well as in suitable local government units;  working in research institutes operating within the field of management science, in departmental units, and in business consultancy and advising;  running his/her own business, consultancy and advisory services;  undertaking doctoral level studies.

HRM specialisation is supervised by The Department of Human Resource Management 10 Main areas of research carried out by the HRM Department:  human resource management,  wages,  European and Polish employment and labour market policies. Researchers working in the HRM Department carry out large scientific projects for the Polish Ministry of Labour and Social Policy. The HRM Department cooperates with prestigious research centres, such as, for instance: Institute for Employment Research, Nuremberg, Germany; Social Science Centre, Berlin, Germany; Universities of Bamberg, Mannheim and Munich; Universities of Leicester, Hull and Worcester.

HRM SPECIALISATION ACADEMIC STAFF 11 Professor Zenon Wiśniewski Head of the HRM Department Professor Wiśniewski’s research include employment, labour market policy and human resource management. He has published over 200 scientific books and articles of which over 50 were released abroad, among others in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria and the Netherlands. He worked as a visiting professor at the University of Munich. Professor Wiśniewski is an active member of the European Economic Association (EEA), the European Association of Labour Economists (EALE) and Societas Humboldtiana Polonorum. He was twice elected Vice-chairman of the Committee on Labour and Social Policy Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Labour Market Council of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province. HRM SPECIALISATION ACADEMIC STAFF 12 Professor Aldona Glińska-Neweś Her research and teaching interests are focused on organisational behaviour, organisational culture change, cultural context of the knowledge management in companies and the social capital in an organisation. Her research and teaching interests embrace labour market, social insurance system, labour costs, human resource management, wages and motivation in an organisation. Her research is focused on regional development and entrepreneurship policy in the Central and Eastern European Countries. Subject: Labour law Monika Maksim, Ph.D. Ph.D. in economics. She carries out research on labour market and effectiveness of active labour market policy. She is also interested in human capital in an organisation and competence development. HRM SPECIALISATION ACADEMIC STAFF 14 Jarosław Oczki, Ph.D. Ph.D. in economics. His research and teaching interests embrace: structural changes in the Polish labour market and earnings inequities in Poland and in the EU. Subjects: Reward systems and motivation; HRM workshops: career management. Agnieszka Szulc, Ph.D. Ph.D. in economics. Her current research is focused on the labour market aspects. Special interests: labour market policy & shadow economy. Subject: Labour Economics.

Her research and teaching interests are focused on employment, effectiveness of labour market policies and IT technologies in HRM. Subject: IT in Human Resources Management Joanna Wińska, Ph.D. Ph.D. in management. Her fields of interest cover internal communication, interpersonal relationships as well as the cultural and behavioural aspects of communication. His research and teaching interests are focused on labour market policy, employment, wages, human resource development, cultural & creative industries. 18 The HRM specialisation graduate:  knows legal, organisational, professional and ethical standards regarding human resource recruiting, development and motivating;  explains the essence and importance of performance appraisal and performance management process, enumerates and characterizes all elements of appraisal performance systems, identifies a variety of appraisal methods, knows and understands psychological errors in performance appraisal;  identifies personnel processes and records them using selected IT systems providing support for human resource management;  knows negotiation strategies, various stages of the negotiation process, negotiation styles, decision-making biases in the process of negotiating;  understands manipulative techniques and knows counteracting measures;  knows the relations between an organisation and its internal and external stakeholders as well as the rules of developing these relations in accordance with ethical standards, CSR and organisational aims; Knowledge (1)

20 The HRM specialisation graduate:  is able to design and manage projects aimed at solving problems regarding HR recruitment, developing and motivation;  can apply appropriate performance appraisal methods and techniques;  can analyse social processes and phenomena in an organisation and their cultural determinants;  is able to make use of relevant IT systems providing support for human resource management;  is able to identify the various stages of the negotiation process, prepare to them and act accordingly; identifies and makes decisions on selecting and applying appropriate neutralizing measures that serve to counteract manipulative techniques and aggressive styles of negotiation; Skills (1)

21 A HRM specialisation graduate:  is able to forecast, identify and analyse problems related to the labour market, making use of theoretical knowledge and formulating own opinions; is able to design and manage projects aimed at solving negative aspects on the labour market; to design a labour market program which addresses major problems identified on a given local labour market; to measure effectiveness and costs of active labour market programs;  interprets labour cost measures and is able to find necessary data to understand labour costs analysis; analyses various factors determining level and structure of labour costs;  is able to apply norms of labour law in order to solve specific problems of human management in organization;  is able to produce written reports and deliver oral presentations on business topics in English at the B2+ level; Skills (2)
