Swets Information Services Subscription agent’s role in e-Business world Trends in the Market and how Swets reacts SC Chen Country Manager, Swets Greater China

The Google Effect – What is happening – What does this mean to the user – What does this mean to the library – What does this mean to the publisher – What does this mean to us – Key message to customers

The Google Effect What is Happening – A new breed of students exist now – the computer age people – They use less and less the library and rely more and more on web search engines for research – Users also give up trying to use the library because it is just too complicated to understand – Web search engines are trying to add as much content as possible, but there is a small problem – they can’t reach it…

The Google Effect What Does That Mean to the User – Now most the information they find in their research is not reliable and many times wrong – When they by accident find an article the library has access to, they often are not able to access it, and if they are, they think the access is free – Users still give more importance to convenience than accuracy, because of this, the industry will adapt to them and not the other way around

The Google Effect What Does That Mean to the Library – Two main problems arise from this for the library: –Decline in circulation –Decline in recognition/appreciation for their service – These two problems directly affect the library’s ability to secure and increase their acquisitions budget – Initially libraries tried to fight this trend, but now are trying to benefit from it by: –Simplifying their services to match requirement of users –Integrate web engines into their resources

The Google Effect What Does That Mean to the Publisher – For publishers this presents both a threat and an opportunity Threat: –If libraries are unable to maintain their budgets, cancellations will occur Opportunity: –New revenue streams are possible: –PPV –Revenue sharing with the search engine (e.g. Elsevier and Google talks)

The Google Effect What Does That Mean to the Us – For Swets this presents both a few threats and opportunities: Threats: –If libraries are unable to maintain their budgets, cancellations will occur –Libraries may purchasing services such as SWoc as access is provided via web search engines Opportunity: –Provide tools that: –simplify the research process for a user and make it convenient that take advantage of web search engines –enable the library to promote and brand themselves even if the user does not consciously use the library

The Google Effect Key Message to Customers Swets will: Help in providing the means for the library to offer a simple and convenient service to their users through tools that will at the same time takes advantage of the Google effect and at the same time steer users to the library. (SWOC, SWTB, SWL & Federated Search)
