Science 3G Unit E, Ch 1 Anything that has mass and takes up space? matter Matter is the stuff things are made of. Things are made of different kinds of matter, most of which we can see, but gases may be invisible.

Science 3G Unit E, Ch 1 How can we measure volume? We can use a graduated cylinder to determine how much space 2 marbles occupy. We can measure the volume of a rectangle in cubic units (cubes). We measure the volume of liquids in gallons, cups, liters, milliliters, pints and ounces.

When we pour lemonade from a wide container to a narrow container, it ’ s shape becomes taller. The volume (amount) of lemonade stays the same. Only its shape has changed.

Science 3G Unit E, Ch 1 Matter that can change in both shape and volume gas When we put gas in a container, it spreads out and fills all the space in the container. The larger the container, the more space the gas will fill. When you fill a balloon with helium, the whole balloon fills. When the balloon pops the helium spreads throughout the entire room. It only seems to disappear.

Science 3G Unit E, Ch 1 How does matter change it ’ s state? A change in temperature causes particles to move quickly or slowly. As particles heat up, they begin to move more rapidly, and become loose. When particles are loose, they cannot hold their own shape. We call this liquid. When they move so quickly that they escape from the other particles, they evaporate into a gas. Although solids don’t always feel cold they are matter which is holding still (frozen in place).

Science 3G Unit E, Ch 1 The process in which a solid becomes a becomes a liquid melting When we raise the temperature of some solids they will melt into a liquid. The molecules begin to loosen and flow.

Science 3G Unit E, Ch 1 The process in which a liquid becomes a gas evaporation When we boil water, it changes it ’ s state from liquid to gas. This is why we say water will evaporate. A towel dries after a shower, because the water evaporates and moves into the air as a gas.

Science 3G Unit E, Ch 1 The process in which a gas becomes a liquid condensation When gasses cool, the particles will move together into drops. Water vapor accumulates into clouds. Steam from a shower will form drops on a cool mirror.

Solid The molecules of a solid are frozen together, which causes them to keep their shape. When we mix solids together, they can be easily separated. Matter which can be easily separated is a mixture.

They slide over and under each other, which allows them to flow. They are fluid. When fluids are mixed together, they are difficult to separate. This is a solution.

Example: a crumb of cake is like a molecule, however, cake is made from combining flour, eggs and other ingredients. The ingredients of a cake are like atoms. When we combine them, we can make something new.
