What is a CPC? Certified Professional Coder Specialists are professionals skilled in classifying medical data from patient records, generally in the hospital setting. These coding practitioners review patients' records and assign numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure. To perform this task, they must possess expertise in the ICD-9-CM coding system and the surgery section within the CPT coding system. In addition, the CCS is knowledgeable of medical terminology, disease processes, and pharmacology. TRAINING This 3 week course was instructed by Ms. Mary Gregory, RHIT, CCS, CPC,CCS-P, of MAS Institute of Education, Charlotte, North Carolina. The course content: ICD- 9-CM, Facility Outpatient Coding, CPT, Physician Procedural Coding, HCPCS (Level II) and documentation and coding guidelines. This 3 week course was instructed by Ms. Mary Gregory, RHIT, CCS, CPC,CCS-P, of MAS Institute of Education, Charlotte, North Carolina. THE FIVE HOUR TEST The national certification exam started at 9:00 am. This comprehensive test was given in 3 sections each with 50 questions that were in a format of direct answer, multiple choice, and ambulatory, hospital, day surgery scenario encounters.
