Theme 1: Expansion of the home office Learn to handle information better Topic 5 Chapter 6.1. Page 305 – 312 Working with information

We live in an information era Sometimes we feel overwhelmed by all the information

Too much information? There is a strategy you can follow to –Make informed decisions –Eliminate all irrelevant data –Identify and use only the necessary information

Step 1 Define the task Ask questions 1.What must I do (Why do I need information?) 2.What information do I need to complete the task? DO NOT Include unnecessary information that has nothing to do with the task

Step 2 Establish where information can be found What sources of information exist? Which of those will be the best for this task? Books Existing sources Radio & TV Magazines Internet

Sources Can you think of any more sources? In which ways can you gather information if you cannot find it in an existing source? Name examples of situations where information is not necessarily found in an existing source.

Step 3 Find the sources and extract information Make photocopies of articles in books and magazines Save web pages and/or make printouts Take notes whilst interviewing someone Take photographs, make a video recording Collect completed questionnaires

VERY important! Save all collected data –Copies of articles –Electronic copies of documents Keep track of your sources –Name of magazine, date of publication –Name of book, authors, ISBN –URL of web pages Backup –Store on CD or another computer’s hard drive

Step 4 Use (process) the information It may include one or more of the following: Make summaries, underline. Write down answers to questions in step 1. Decide what are the core concepts of the information that you’ve underlined. Draw a mind map to organise information. Enter data of questionnaires in a spreadsheet.

Step 5 Presenting the information Make a poster Write a report (produce a document) Make a presentation Create a web page

Step 6 Evaluate the process and the product Look at step 1 again – does the final product satisfy the description of what you have to do? Have you answered all the questions that you have set in the beginning? Have you given recognition to all the sources you have used? What else do you think can one add to such a checklist?

Activity 1 Page 309 Revise Draw a mind map or flow chart to help the learners plan and finalise their tasks in a better way by making use of this 6-step strategy.

Before you carry on... Ask a Grade 8 teacher what the type of tasks are that learners do. Choose one of these tasks that sounds interesting to you as a class – in the following section, you are going to apply the asking of the questions on that task.

Asking the right questions (More detail for step 1) how good the questions were that you asked. The success of any type of task that you have to do, depends on how good the questions were that you asked. Key questions = questions that describe the task –What must I organise ; How can I save the company money?; What food should the tuck shop sell? There are different types of questions that you can ask....???

Factual questions Can answers be found in books, on Internet or in people involved in project. Only one correct answer (facts). Answer sometimes yes/no. Can start with What, who, when, how many, where, name, identify, define.

Which factual questions can you ask that are applicable to the Gr 8-project that you have chosen? ? ? ?

Investigative questions Make use of the answers to the factual questions. Determine similarities and differences between facts. Seek reasons for facts. Can begin with Why; how; in which way

Which investigative questions can you ask that are applicable to the Gr 8-project that you have chosen? ? ? ?

Change questions Prove that you have thought about the information you collected. Try to ascertain how situations could have been different. Make predictions or draw conclusions. Can begin with Suppose, predict, if, how, how would, what are the possible consequences of.

Which change questions can you ask that are applicable to the Gr 8-project that you have chosen? ? ? ?

Judgement questions Form and express your own opinion. What is your viewpoint on an issue Defend your opinion / verdict Can begin with Defend, make a judgement, what do you think of.., motivate, what are the advantages.

Which judgemental questions can you ask that are applicable to the Gr 8-project that you have chosen? ? ? ?
