We live in an information era Sometimes we feel overwhelmed by all the information

Too much information? There is a strategy you can follow to –Make informed decisions –Eliminate all irrelevant data –Identify and use only the necessary information

Step 1 Define the task Ask questions 1.What must I do (Why do I need information?) 2.What information do I need to complete the task? DO NOT Include unnecessary information that has nothing to do with the task

Step 2 Establish where information can be found What sources of information exist? Which of those will be the best for this task? Books Existing sources Radio & TV Magazines Internet

Sources Can you think of any more sources? In which ways can you gather information if you cannot find it in an existing source? Name examples of situations where information is not necessarily found in an existing source.

Step 3 Find the sources and extract information Make photocopies of articles in books and magazines Save web pages and/or make printouts Take notes whilst interviewing someone Take photographs, make a video recording Collect completed questionnaires

VERY important! Save all collected data –Copies of articles –Electronic copies of documents Keep track of your sources –Name of magazine, date of publication –Name of book, authors, ISBN –URL of web pages Backup –Store on CD or another computer’s hard drive

Step 4 Use (process) the information It may include one or more of the following: Make summaries, underline. Write down answers to questions in step 1. Decide what are the core concepts of the information that you’ve underlined. Draw a mind map to organise information. Enter data of questionnaires in a spreadsheet.

Step 5 Presenting the information Make a poster Write a report (produce a document) Make a presentation Create a web page

Step 6 Evaluate the process and the product Look at step 1 again – does the final product satisfy the description of what you have to do? Have you answered all the questions that you have set in the beginning? Have you given recognition to all the sources you have used? What else do you think can one add to such a checklist?
