Unit 1 Lesson 1 The Personal Meaning of Health and Wellness.

Opening Work How would you define “Health” How would you define “Wellness”

Health Is… “…a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” - World Health Organization

Wellness: A Broader Concept A healthy balance of the mind, body, and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being Constant, conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential Acceptance or satisfaction with present personal condition An active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and successful existence A positive state of the entire being and its ongoing development Self-assessment of emotional, social, physical, intellectual, and spiritual well-being

Activity With a partner…Use the previous descriptors of wellness as triggers for your own thinking and create a definition for wellness you and your partner can agree upon Now we need a class definition

Mind Map We are going to focus on the meaning this phrase has for each of us by creating mind maps. A mind map is a diagram of words or ideas that describe a key concept. In this case “Health and Wellness.” **Does Health and Wellness include only our Physical Health??? What else does it include??? I’ll give examples of mind maps and then you will create your own.

Have access to healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables Maintain a healthy body weight by healthy eating and physical activity Use self-discipline to choose safe and healthy behaviors Have access to medical, dental, and mental health services Move to the best of my ability Make and keep positive friendships Mind Map: Health and Wellness Live in a smoke-free environment Get help when I need it Have access to healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables Get an appropriate amount of sleep and rest Have access to safe locations for physical activity

Life Without Good Health and Wellness Belonging to a group is more important than personal health or safety Unsure where or how to get help Smokey air results in coughing and wheezing Feel sad, down, or low energy Mind Map: Life Without Good Health and Wellness Few or no positive friendships Under or over a healthy body weight No fun and excitement in life Uncomfortable and/or difficult physical movement or function Disregard for health and safety when planning activities

Six Categories of Risk Behaviors The Center of Disease Control and Prevention has identified six categories of behavior that cause the most adverse health and social outcomes. Can you guess what one of them might be?? www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/yrbs/

Six Categories of Risk Behaviors Behaviors that contribute most to adverse health and social outcomes… Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behaviors that result in HIV infection, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy Tobacco use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Physical inactivity …for youth ages 15 to 24 – almost 75% of deaths …for adults – almost 66% of deaths

Leading Causes of Death Analyze the causes of death from 1981-2009 Hypothesize the reasons for the changes from 1900-present.

10 Leading Causes of Death Compare the leading causes of death for different age groups (15 to 24 years of age, 25 to 34 years of age, all ages) during several time periods. What are the reasons for the differences and changes
