Why am I talking to you today? Preparing year 8 students assessments in English, Science and Maths Because we as a Year 8 team CARE about you Message from todays assembly, prepare not scare, being independent

Where are you in your journey through Year 8? Since September 2013 you have been climbing a mountain. How are we going to get from base camp to the summit of Year 8?

What everyone achieves is different Some people will achieve their target grade Some people will not achieve their target grade – but will later! Some people will exceed their target grade. Our journeys are all different.

Lets set the scene for getting to the summit All of your studies in year 7 and 8 have been preparing you for this moment. You have an amazing support network (Sherpa’s) to help you get to the summit. Teachers Tutors Each other Parents But you are part of this team, You are a partner and together your team is aiming for the summit.

KS3 Preparation for Assessment Booklet This booklet helps you record information that will help you get to the summit, it has; A place to record target grades A place to write down what your science and Maths teachers need you to revise A timetable to help you structure your time This booklet can be filled in by you and it is personnel to you.

Inside your booklet there is a page that looks like this You need to write down target level that you are aiming for in Maths and Science. Your teachers can help find these out. Then sign it to say that you are going for it

What do I need to revise? Your teachers will go over with you about what areas you need to go over. Use this page to write for your secific areas and remember it may be different to other people.

Revision timetable This is to help you structure how you revise in your free time. You should only aim for 10 SESSIONS Remember we are here to prepare not scare! Date30mins 1 st June 2 nd June 3 rd JuneTutor Lesson 4 th June 5 th June 8 th June 9 th JuneTutor Lesson 10 th June 11 th June 12 th June 15 th June 16 th June 17 th June 18 th June 19 th JuneTutor Lesson 22 nd June 23 rd June 24 th June 25 th June

Subject Resources In the booklet there is also written down the web address for online resources. As well as times/ days of revision up sessions.

Revision Strategies We want you to try and push your revision into the ACTIVE zone. Try out some of these techniques before your mocks and see if they help you!

be independent – prepare for yourself. How to reach the top

Just a minute The best way to remember something is to teach it yourself. Revise a topic and then find a volunteer. Give yourself a minute and try and teach someone the key points about the topic. You might want to create some resources to help with your explanation.

Play-doh Get yourself a pot of play-doh. Use it to create models of concepts or topics you have covered. You could use it to represent a character or an important individual.

Mind-maps These can be a really useful way to learn. Make them big, make them bold. A3 size works well. Use colours, pictures, words. A good idea is to get an exam buddy. Revise a topic together and then produce a giant mind- map between you.

One Simple Word EXTRA Turns ordinary into EXTRA-ORDINARY

How many times did he fall off? He was not afraid of failing He was committed He was organised He understood what he needed to do to improve No fear of failure He learnt from his mistakes and got better – Love your mistakes! Without these habits his journey would have been a lot shorter.
