Periodic Table Word Wall S: Why are things put into specific categories? Hint: Why does HEB have aisles that have similar products?

Word Wall Choose 3 of these words. Using the textbook, write the word on the front of each paper strip along with a visual representation of the word. Write the definition on the back. ● Period ● Group ● Metal ● Non-Metal ● Metalloid ● Reactivity ● Atomic Number ● Atomic Mass ● Noble Gas ● Periodic Table P & A:

Using Your Own Words Choose 3 vocabulary words you did not make a strip for and write an explanation for each in your own words using complete sentences. C:

Use 5 of the vocabulary words you have learned today to create a fictional story about the organization of the Periodic Table. E:

Labeling the Periodic Table S: Looking at your Periodic Table, tell me as much information as you already know about it. Write in complete sentences.

A:

Venn Diagram Create a Venn Diagram to compare yourself with a classmate and a family member. Think about physical characteristics and even personality traits. C:

What are the 3 main categories used to organize the Periodic Table of Elements? What is a column and a row called? E: Period Group METALS NON- METALS METALLIODS

S: What are the parts of an atom and where is each part located. Be sure to give the charge of each. SE 8.5C The student will interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table to explain how properties are used to classify elements by viewing an interactive power point Interpreting Periodic Table

P: Color Coding the PT sk There are 18 Groups (columns) and 7 Periods (rows)

A: Interactive PowerPoint on Periodic Table Write and Answer Question: In the modern periodic table elements are organized based on their __________________. The Periodic Table consists of 7 rows called __________. The atoms of all the elements in a PERIOD have the same number of ____________. The periodic table consist of 18 columns called ______________. Elements in the ___________ group have the same number of valence electrons and ____________ similar properties. Sodium, potassium, and lithium belong to the same _________ they share similar Chemical properties. Elements in Group 1, except for hydrogen are alkali metals…and are very _________. Metals are located on the __________ side, metalloids in the __________, and nonmetals on the __________ side Atomic number periods energy shells groups same share group reactive leftmiddle right

Find 12 elements. Create a table with the headings Metals, Nonmetals and Metalloids and classify four elements under each correct heading. MetalsMetalloidsNonmetals C: Metal, Metalloids, and Nonmetals

E: Timmy is having trouble remembering how the Table is arranged. Using your knowledge of the Periodic Table help Timmy out. Explain groups, periods, metals, metalloids, and nonmetals. What is important to know about the periods and groups? Where are the most reactive elements located?

Valence Clues S: What is the difference between groups and periods on the Periodic Table? Explain your answer…. Answer: There are 18 groups and 7 periods. Groups tell you the # of valence electrons and periods tell you the # of energy shells of elements. Groups also let you know how reactive elements are.

P: Importance of Valence Electrons based on the Periodic Table 1.Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons and share similar properties. 2.Elements in Group 1 have one valence electron in their outer most shell. 3.Elements in Group 2 have two valence electrons. 4.Number of Valence electrons determine the chemical properties of elements. G VEVE G = Group VE = # of Valence Electrons

P: 5. Period number determines number of energy shells (levels). 6. Use period number and group number to locate elements in the Periodic Table. -Just like using longitude and latitude on a map. Period 1 Period 2 Period 3 Period 4 Period 5 Period 6 Period 7

A & C: Valence Clues

E: Quick Label of the Period Table Quick Label of the Periodic Table. Groups, Periods, Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids, Most reactive, least reactive. A ______ B: __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ C ________ _________ D E.E.

Periodic Table Video Looking at the Periodic Table. Which group is the most reactive and most stable on the Periodic Table? Explain your answer.

C: Think about an atom’s outermost energy shell where valence electrons are located as its ability to hold you and your friends. The outermost energy level can hold up to 8 valence electrons. If you compare a round table that holds 8 people to the outermost shell of an atom, which atom would allow you and your 5 friends to sit? If the table is full would you and your friends be able to sit there?

P&A: Media Video & Questions

C & E: Think about activities and discussions we had this week. Write a ½ page reflection on what you learned and what you found interesting. MetalsMetalloidsNonmetals
