24 th Amendment

Definition-Declares poll taxes in State and Federal elections unconstitutional. How does the term apply to U.S. Government? The Twenty-Fourth Amendment affects the U.S. government because free elections allows all citizens, poor and rich to participate equally in elections. Equal participation provides more stable checks and balances in the government. Ex: Many Southern states started a poll tax in the late 1800’s for the purpose of preventing poor whites and blacks to vote. Often times, the poll tax was compounded, meaning the price of voting would rise based on the number of times a citizen has voted.

How does it apply to U.S. Government? 1)Vice President 2)Speaker of the house 3) President pro tempore of the Senate 4) Secretary of State 5) Secretary of Treasury 6) Secretary of Defense 7) Attorney General 8) Secretary of the Interior 9) Secretary of Agriculture 10) Secretary of Commerce 11) Secretary of Labor 12)Secretary of Health and Human Science 13) Secretary of Housing and Urban Development 14) Secretary of Transportation 15) Secretary of Energy 16) Secretary of Education 17) Secretary of Veteran Affairs 18) Secretary of Homeland Security Ex: After JFK was assassinated, Vice President Johnson succeeded Kennedy and Humphrey became vice president; However, the twenty-fifth Amendment was not ratified until five years following Kennedy’s death.

This applies to the U.S. because elections now impacted the people the age of eighteen that became part of a new political demographic. Propaganda increased towards influencing young people to vote. Ex: The minimum voting age of eighteen was set during the Vietnam war when eighteen year old men protested the draft since they could not vote. The Amendment was ratified in 1971.

27 th Amendment

Definition-Prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of members of Congress from taking effect until the next set of terms of office for Representatives. How does it apply to U.S. Government? Members of Congress are less corrupt when they are voting for members of the following Congress a wage increase. Ex: Congressional Members vote for a pay raise for the next Congress.

Delegated Powers

Powers designated and authorized by the Federal government to a lower authority. How does it apply to U.S. Government? This applies to the class because the Government is reliant on Federal agencies which it delegates to perform duties.
