CMPD 434 MULTIMEDIA AUTHORING Chapter 07 Issues Related to Distribution of Multimedia

Objective At the end of this chapter, students should be able to: Social issues, Copyrights, security E-Commerce and distribution channels Maintenance

Social issues, Copyrights, security Copyright Copyright refers to the legal protection for people who express ideas and information in a variety of forms. The most common forms resemble the data types that are used in multimedia system: writing, visual images, music and moving images. Computer software is also protected by copyright laws. It is important that when you use data that is not your own it is acknowledged correctly and the author recognized and/or compensated. In particular the programs PowerPoint, Visual basic and 3DS Max, copyright issues can arise commonly. Appropriate use of the Internet Appropriate use of the Internet is an; issue of concern throughout society and many organizations monitor online activity users and have guidelines that users are expected to follow. Now that multimedia content is so readily available online, there is even more unease about whether people are being responsible, for example, at work or school. Therefore many organizations have guidelines. For example, the creation, transmission, downloading of any offensive or obscene material. Appropriate use of the internet is an ongoing concern within schools and the workplace. There are numerous filtering software programs, such as Blue reef, which block prescriberd sites, decided upon by the administrators.

Social issues, Copyrights, security The merging of radio, television, communications and the Internet Increasing improvements in digital technology is blurring the lines between the traditional formats of radio, television and the Internet. Digital broadcasting is the catalyst for a new media delivering more diversity in content and a crossover between television, radio and online content. The merging of these mediums can be exceedingly positive. It enables to access content in one simple location, rather than searching across several multimedia platforms to find the relevant information. The integrity of original source data The quality of a multimedia system will depend significantly on the integrity of the data it contains. It is important to cross-reference material; - particularly if it is sourced from the Internet.; Unlike books, which must generally comply with the editorial policy of the publisher, there are few barriers to publishing on the web. As a rule, government and educational sites (particularly universities) are reliable whereas online documents that have unverifiable information are more likely to have questionable integrity.

Social issues, Copyrights, security Current and emerging trends in multimedia An example of a current and/or emerging trend in multimedia is the increasing development of virtual worlds for entertainment and training. Emerging trends, such as advancements in multimedia technology, for example, the introduction of Smart Boards into a huge number of school classrooms, is an example of how a multimedia software is extremely beneficial to education and training. It is a versatile teaching tool that has the capability to greatly enhance learning opportunities in students across all age groups. The interactivity, user friendly and informative and creative properties of the Smart Board make it an incredibly positive emerging trend in multimedia in education and training.

Distribution in E-Commerce Why It’s Important Application can sell all they are able, but if their distribution methods are not well planned and executed, they will quickly lose credibility with their customers. One of the important functions is delivering the right product or service in the right quantities in the right place at the right time.

Different E-Commerce Channels Direct Traffic Direct traffic channels include marketing, affiliate marketing, and direct URL navigation/bookmarking. Paid Search Paid search means buying traffic from search engines (e.g. Google and Bing) on a pay-per- click (PPC) basis. Search engines can drive traffic to your site for further conversion, and paid search requires you to master the creation and management of keywords, keyword- level building, conversion rates, etc. Comparison Shopping Engines (CSEs) There are over 100 comparison shopping engines with a variety of different business models from free (Google Product Search and TheFind.com) to pay-per-click (Shopping.com, Shopzilla, Nextag, etc.). CSEs can also drive traffic to your site (usually item pages) for further conversion.

Different Ecommerce Channels Marketplaces Marketplaces are sites that allow you to offer your items for sale. The consumer purchases them from the marketplace, not your site. eBay is the largest marketplace, followed by Amazon. Amazon’s success in marketplaces has led to an explosion of new marketplaces like Sears, Walmart, Newegg, and Buy.com Mobile The use of smartphones with sophisticated web browsers and barcode-scanning applications has increased their usage in online shopping. While still small, it’s an area retailers need to be tracking carefully, and we strongly recommend building capabilities in this area. Social With over 750 million active users on Facebook and 200 million Twitter users, online consumers are spending a bulk of their online activities engaged in social media. As Facebook and Twitter mature, they are also looking at social commerce. Some online retailers are already seeing significant primary and secondary sales from these channels, and we recommend retailers start experimenting there now.

Maintenance and Updating Maintenance covers many activities. It depends on the type, genre and platform of the multimedia application Continuous contact with user can result in continuous maintenance, documentation and debugging. Maintenance, if an error is suddenly identified in the application. Maintenance and updates managed by the client.

Maintenance and Updating Maintenance of CD-Rom production will typically related to the next version, as the application cannot be changed once it is burned on a CD-Rom. Online multimedia production for Internet or Intranet are often more dynamic. Using the application often means changing and updating information. The developing company may be involved in updates. The updates can be said to be maintenance. If the client is in charge of updating, the developer is responsible for producing an application that the client is capable of updating or teach the client how to update the application.

Training Teaching and educating an audience about the purpose and use of a product Training equips users to be self-sufficient with a product – reduces users’ need for support Consequently, training should reduce the cost of supporting the product
