Make sure you picked up a periodic table Warm-Up 9/4/14 Make sure you picked up a periodic table Identify and highlight the six (including Carbon) elements that make up organic compounds. Carefully outline the Non-Metals section using a black marker (hint: look at back cover of textbook) Secure the periodic table in your journal and add to your table of contents: 6. Periodic Table of Elements

Card Sort Sort your word cards into 3 groups.

Chemistry For Life Organic and Inorganic Compounds

REVIEW Elements • A substance consisting of a single type of atom. It is pure. It cannot be broken down into different kinds of matter. Are arranged on the periodic table Elements make up molecules or compounds

The Periodic Table of Elements

REVIEW Compounds A substance formed from two or more different elements that have chemically combined The elements lose their individual chemical properties and the compound has new properties. Cannot be easily separated C12H22O11 NaCl Table Sugar Table salt

Mixtures REVIEW A substance consisting of two or more substances mixed together. Mixtures can usually be separated.

Card Sort Put away your element and mixture cards Sort your remaining word cards into 2 groups. You must decide what “rule” you want to use to sort your cards.

Organic Compounds To understand life on Earth, you must first understand organic compounds.  Organic compounds contain carbon which can be bonded to hydrogen, sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and/or phosphorus.  There are millions of different organic compounds.  There are organic compounds that make up your hair, your skin, even your fingernails.  All life as we know it is made up of organic compounds.

Organic vs. Inorganic In science, Organic can be a biological or chemical term. In Biology it means any thing that is living or has lived. In Chemistry, an Organic compound is one containing Carbon atoms. The opposite term is Inorganic.

Organic Requirements Organic Compounds have the following properties: 1. MUST contain Carbon (C) 2. Must have a C-H bond (carbon-hydrogen). 3. Carbon may also be combined with Sulfur (S), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), and/or Phosphorus (P) 4. Living or from something that was living

Card Sort Should your “rule” be adjusted? Now separate your cards into organic and inorganic compounds

Copy Organic Inorganic Ca3(PO4)2 Glucose C6H12O6 Vitamin B-12 Calcium Phosphate Ca3(PO4)2 Glucose C6H12O6 Vitamin B-12 C63H88CON14O14P Table Salt NaCl Chalk CaCO3 Vinegar CH3COOH Methane CH4 Water H2O Baking Soda NaHCO3 Coenzyme A C21H36N7O16P3S Ethanol CH3CH2OH Hydrochloric Acid HCl Sucrose (Table Sugar) C12H22O11 Bleach NaOCl
