Podcasting, Video and Screencasting, and Live Streaming Multimedia Publishing for the Masses

Overview Introduction Podcasting Video Publishing Screencasting Live Streaming-Web TV For The Classroom Conclusion

Introduction In the last few years there has been an explosion in multimedia publishing on the web due to the accessibility of technology. Here are some examples of this:  Podcasters create their own Internet radio.  Videobloggers produce their own Web television.  Screencasters capture what happens on their computer screens, and add audio narratives, as well as publish mulitmedia Web tours and stories.  Students and teachers broadcast live to large and global audiences using live streaming tools.

Podcasting What is Podcasting? Podcasting is a method used to get your audio message out to the masses using the internet. What do you need to create a basic Podcast? A way to record digital audio.  Most computers have a microphone built right in, but if you don't, plug in a microphone to your computer. Software to capture what you record in MP3 format.  Download a free open-source program known as Audacity at (tinyurl.com/4gx3j).

Podcasting (con't) MP3 encoder, which translates your files into MP3's.  This can be done by downloading Audacity's free MP3 encoder at (tinyurl.com/bka3e).

Podcasting (con't) Using Audacity for podcasting: Figure out what you want to say Open Audacity and click record Speak into the microphone, say what you need to and click stop. You can even add music if you want to add a little spark. Play a little with the editing features and once you are happy with your work, "Export as MP3" from the file section and you are ready to publish on your blog or webite that has an RSS feed.

Video Publishing What do you need to publish a video? A digital video camera. Editing and production platforms:  Windows and Mac have good basic video editors in Movie Maker and iMovie. A place to upload your video to:  Try Youtube, teacher tube, or any other site that you subscribe to that offers this application.  Once you have chosen your site, copy and paste the HTML code into the blog's post-editing form and it is ready.

Screencasting Screencasting is a method used to capture what you do on the computer with an audio narration to go with it. What do you need to screencast? Screencasting software (for ease of use I suggest Jing), which can be downloaded for free at (Jingproject.com). Free Screencast.com account, which will provide a code for your screencast that you will copy and paste into your blog or personal website.

Live Streaming-Web TV For the Classroom Live streaming allows you to create your own TV shows online. What will you need to create a live video stream on the internet? Fast and stable internet connection. Computer with microphone, external Webcam or built-in video camera. Free acount at an online video streaming site such as (Ustream.tv). Once you create your live stream, save the show, retrieve the code and embed it in your selected site and your ready to go.

Conclusion During this presentation we briefly touched on the following multimedia publishing tools: o Podcasting o Video o Screencasting o Live Streaming If nothing else you are aware of their existance and have a better understanding of what each one can do for you in the future. In a nutshell, this technology is not going anywhere and in fact, will only become more embedded in the way we communicate our ideas to one another for years to come.
