Free web tools that can enhance instruction, provide opportunities for differentiation, and motivate students to take an active role in their own learning. Patricia McGonagle 7 th grade ELA teacher Lawrence, MA

Today’s Objectives: Examine a wide variety of free (or nearly free) web tools for use in the classroom. Learn how web tools can help to differentiate instruction in a diverse classroom. What is the Web 2.0? There is no set definition of Web 2.0, but it generally refers to the use of the web as a more interactive, social form of media. Users participate by creating their own content, collaborating with others, remixing material, and sharing alongside the content provided by the websites. Many of the Web 2.0 sites are free and are “in the cloud,” meaning you don’t need to be tied to one specific computer to access your files, sites, etc. There is no set definition of Web 2.0, but it generally refers to the use of the web as a more interactive, social form of media. Implications for using web tools in the classroom Allows for differentiated instruction: Differentiate by interest Differentiate by learning profile Differentiate the content (what you teach, what you use to teach) Differentiate by process (the activities/strategies you use to teach) Differentiate by product (how students show what they learned) Allows for differentiated instruction: Differentiate by interest Differentiate by learning profile Differentiate the content (what you teach, what you use to teach) Differentiate by process (the activities/strategies you use to teach) Differentiate by product (how students show what they learned)

REMEMBER! Effective use of instructional technology must first be grounded in well-planned and sound teaching practices, not the technology itself.

Can be an effective tool for differentiated instruction by providing academic support for struggling learners as well as challenging activities for more advanced learners. More engaging and motivating for students when traditional textbook, paper and pencil tasks are usually dull.

First steps… Take some time to discover what these web tools can offer you and your students. Don’t be intimidated by all that is out there. Pick a few that interest you and try them out. I suggest using the same username and password for all of them because it makes it easier to remember. You don’t have to be a pro using the tools. Your students can be great at helping you figure things out. They’ll love it! Take some time to discover what these web tools can offer you and your students.
