Handwriting Correct pencil grip Correct letter formation

Punctuation This term we will be encouraging children to use some punctuation in their work. Our main focus will be leaving spaces between words, but we will also introduce capital letters and full stops when your child is ready.

Rhyming strings Can the children recognise rhyming words and continue a rhyming string? Rhyming words bingo Rhyming story book Nursery rhymes

Numbers Number recognition up to and beyond 20 is important. We will be looking at hundred squares and thinking about some of the patterns we can see and thinking of easy ways to remember numbers. Can the children count in 10’s, 5’s and even 2’s? Counting

Subtraction We want the children to have a secure understanding that subtraction means taking away. We will be taking away practically and counting backwards on number lines. We will also introduce the children to simple sums.

Addition We want the children to know that adding is placing 2 sets together to make a larger set. We will be doing this practically and by counting on using a number line. We will also be teaching the children some doubles and simple number bonds.

Shapes This term we want the children to be able to name 2D shapes (square, rectangle, circle, triangle, diamond, pentagon) The children will also begin to look more closely at simple 3D shapes (cube, cuboid, sphere, pyramid, cone, cylinder)

Physical Education Ball skills Throwing and catching Dance and moving creatively Safe use of apparatus Importance of a healthy lifestyle

Transition This term we will begin to introduce more structure to the daily routine to prepare the children for the changes in year 1. We will restrict the access to free flow outdoor play and introduce playtimes instead Before the end of the school year the children will meet their year 1 teacher and visit their new classroom. Our aim is to make the transition as easy as possible for your child.

What can you do to help? Please read and practise sounds and sight words for at least 5-10 minutes every day. Send in any old boxes and newspapers for art work Count and look at numbers at every opportunity

WOW! We want to celebrate all of the lovely things you do with your children at home. We will be sending home a new book with the children and we ask to use this book to tell us about anything your child does at home, no matter how big or small, that makes you say “Wow!”
