The University of Tirana was founded on 16 September 1957 under the name of State University of Tirana. The State University of Tirana was composed of 6 faculties in which some previously established institutes were included, such as: Institute of Science (1947) Institute of Medicine (1951) Polytechnic Institute (1951) Institute of Economics (1951) Institute of Law (1954) The University of Tirana and the Polytechnic University were founded in 1991 from the State University of Tirana.

For the academic year 2005 – 2006 according to Bologna Process The University of Tirana prepared Its Guideline

Cycles University of Tirana started its academic year 2005 – 2006 with the new curricula compiled according to the Bologna Process. University of Tirana gives 55 diferent Bachelor diploma. The duration of Bachelor is generally 3 years. For Law and Economics studies diploma the duration is years. University of Tirana deliver second cycle, “Master” level. The duration of a Master degree is 2 years or 1 year. The 3d cycle- “Doctorate” is given after completing the Master and it lasts from 3 to 5 years – 2006 Curricula according to the Bologna Process

Bologna as a process The number of optional modules has increased - up to 20% of all Bachelor curriculum Teaching is integrated with research and development. Internal evaluation group is already established in each faculty and are trained from Agency of Accreditation for Higher Education.

Research Activity Departments cover a field or a scientific orientation for which they have institutional responsibility The institution of the professor functions in the department and the working groups are in the shape of a pyramid, the top of which is the professor and then the Doctorate and Master postgraduates as well as the students. Research activity is performed through projects funding introduced by government or/and various grants for research scholars.

Students` Life Students of the University of Tirana are accommodated in the campus named “Students` City”. At Students` disposal are the canteen, theater hall, cinema, conference room, library, game- hall, study-hall, media room, Health Center, social service office for the youth.
