2 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Objectives Describe the improvements of Windows 2000 Professional over earlier versions of the operating system. Install Windows 2000 Professional successfully from CD-ROM. Use the functions of the operating system. Manage files and folders. Use the Windows 2000 unique features to customize the use of your operating system.

4 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Pre-installation of Windows 2000 Make sure you have the necessary hardware requirements. Make sure your hardware is on the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). Select a file system for the installation partition. Identify whether you want to do an upgrade or a clean install.

7 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Desktop Main workspace in 2000 Contains small pictures called icons Can customize the desktop color and create shortcuts and toolbars

8 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Mouse Tool used to navigate the desktop and other programs Left mouse button is used to select (click once) or open (double-click) items Right mouse button activates context menus You can configure the mouse: – Buttons – Pointers – Speed

9 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Taskbar and Start Button The taskbar is the gray rectangular bar at the bottom of the desktop. – Can be customized with your favorite icons – Can be moved to any area of the desktop The Start button contains the icons to open programs, documents, and the Shut Down command.

10 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Windows Area or workspace you see when you open a program or application Contains: – Title bar – Minimize, Restore, and Close buttons – Scroll Bars Can be resized

13 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional My Computer Represents your computer with its hardware devices and document folders. You can customize the My Computer window: – Change the view of icons – Change the arrangement of icons

14 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Folders Folders are a storage space for files. Subfolders are folders within a folder. The parent folder in the main folder that contains subfolders. You can change the manner in which folders, files, icons, and windows operate through Folder Options, found under the Tools menu.

15 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Working with Files and Folders The Cut command removes a file. The Copy command duplicates a file. The Paste command places a cut or copied file in a new location. The Rename command changes the name of a file or folder. The Delete command places it in the Recycle Bin when deleting from the hard drive and removes it completely from the floppy drive.

16 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Working with Files and Folders (continued) Copy Disk will copy the contents of a floppy to another floppy. Finding Files is accomplished with the Search command.

17 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Windows Explorer Another method for viewing files and performing file management tasks Split into 2 panes: – Folders – Contents You can copy, move, rename, and delete files and folders as you did in My Computer.

18 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Word Processing WordPad is used for word processing. The feature called Word automatically moves your insertion point to the next line. The Backspace and Delete keys are used for editing text.

20 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Creating Shortcuts A shortcut is a quick way to open a file without going to its original location. Two ways to create shortcuts: – Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to find a file icon, right-click and select Copy, and then right-click on the desktop and select Paste Shortcut. – Right-click and drag a file icon from My Computer or Windows Explorer, then select Create Shortcut Here from the context menu. Create shortcuts in the Start menu by dragging an icon from My Computer or Windows Explorer and dropping it in the correct place on the Start menu.

21 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Control Panel Contains options to customize Windows 2000: – Add/Remove Hardware – Add/Remove Programs – Date/Time – Display – Folder Options – Keyboard – Mouse – Printers – Sounds and Multimedia

22 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional System Maintenance Disk Cleanup – Removes unnecessary files safely from the machine. Check Disk – Locates problem areas on the hard disk and attempts to repair them. Disk Defragmenter – Improves the performance of the drive by placing pieces of files closer together. Task Scheduler – Schedules maintenance tasks to run automatically.

23 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Summary Windows 2000 Professional has improvements over earlier versions of the operating system including ease of use, ease of file management, better security, and increased hardware compatibility. When you install Windows 2000 Professional, preparation (including verifying that your hardware is on the HCL) will help you avoid potential problems.

24 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Summary (continued) The desktop is your main workspace in Windows The mouse is the tool you will use to open files, programs, and menus. The taskbar displays any programs that you have minimized as well as the Start button. A window is the area of workspace you see when you open a program or application.

25 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Summary (continued) My Computer contains an icon for all of your disk drives and a special folder to control your printers and access the Control Panel. Windows 2000 comes with a program called WordPad that allows you to do basic word processing tasks. A shortcut is a quick way to open a file or program without having to go to its original location.

26 Lesson 5 – Windows 2000 Professional Summary (continued) Windows has built-in tools to help you maintain and improve your system’s performance. The most commonly used tools for maintaining your system are Disk Cleanup, Check Disk, and Disk Defragmenter.
