2 Send Word Now | Proprietary and Confidential | Not For Distribution St. Vincent’s Hospital Communicate, React, Respond ● On January 15, 2009, a US Airways plane headed for Charlotte crash landed into the Hudson River. ● Within minutes St. Vincent’s Hospital activated their emergency notification system. ● Messages were sent to key response teams. ● Staff was informed and prepared to respond to and treat incoming casualties. ● Fortunately, no serious injuries resulted from the crash.

3 Send Word Now | Proprietary and Confidential | Not For Distribution ST. Vincent’s Getting the Word Out ● Sample of message that St. Vincent’s Hospital could have sent to staff: “To senior staff, medical leadership and disaster teams. A commercial airliner has crash landed in the Hudson River. There were 150 people on board the plane. At this point we do not have information regarding casualties/injuries. We are assembling in the main conference room at 4:00 PM to make preparations in the event our assistance is needed.”

4 Send Word Now | Proprietary and Confidential | Not For Distribution Case Study CHRISTUS Health Situation ● CHRISTUS Health is among the top ten largest Catholic health systems in the United States. ● In 2008 alone, CHRISTUS Health had to prepare for three major hurricanes – Eduardo, Gustav and Ike. ● CHRISTUS Health had to brace hospitals throughout Louisiana and Texas and notify associates on the weekend as the storms approached. Outcome ● CHRISTUS Health used its emergency notification system to rapidly communicate emergency plans and send updates on the progression of the storms to staff in the affected areas. ● CHRISTUS Health also requested volunteers to deploy to various facilities. ● Via CHRISTUS Health’s emergency notification system, volunteers were able to respond with their availability.

5 Send Word Now | Proprietary and Confidential | Not For Distribution Case Study CHRISTUS Health ● The Reaction “Hurricane Dean was another scare that prompted a hurricane watch. We have many long-term care facilities in the affected regions and had to be prepared to evacuate patients and staff. We used the system to communicate emergency plans, and met two times a day prior to the hurricane entering our region. Luckily nothing happened, but with our emergency notification system, we were prepared.” —Bill Mundt Program Manager, Quality and Risk CHRISTUS Health
