Phonics Parents Meeting Friday 5th June2015 Welcome to our Read Write Inc Phonics Parents Meeting Friday 5th June2015 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

VH Wadworth Primary School English is the most complicated language in the world • 44 sounds but only 26 letters • Many sounds are written in more than one way • There are over 150 graphemes (the letter or letters that represent a sound) to learn 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

VH Wadworth Primary School igh, i_e, ie, I, y light kite tie fly 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

VH Wadworth Primary School There are a variety of ways to teach reading and writing. The system we are using is Read Write Inc. Created by Ruth Miskin Links reading, writing and language. 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

The Five Principles of RWI •Pace – fast pacey lessons with 100% participation •Praise – Lots and lots of praise •Purpose – Every activity has a purpose •Participation – Consistent partner work to involve everyone •Passion - We enjoy teaching the lessons, children enjoy taking part, we are passionate that all children will read 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

What does a RWI session look like? Children learn simple sounds – 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

VH Wadworth Primary School Pronouncing the sounds Read, Write Inc uses pure sounds, ‘m’ not’ muh’, ’s’ not ‘suh’, so that your child will be able to blend the sounds into words more easily. 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

Fred Talk Blending the sounds into words 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

VH Wadworth Primary School Not all words are nice and easy to sound out but we highlight these to the children so that they learn other ways of ‘reading’ them. • Green words = regular sand, hat, much • Red words = your, was, said, no, go Its harder to ‘Fred a red’! We have to just ‘learn’ red words! me 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

VH Wadworth Primary School The children’s understanding and learning is regularly assessed throughout the program. 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

VH Wadworth Primary School Children are put into groups depending on where they are with learning their letter sounds and their ability to blend the sounds they know into words The more they practice the better they will get! 16/05/2015 VH Wadworth Primary School

Read Write Inc. Phonemes Pronunciation Guide How can you help? •Make sure your child is in school on time!! Read Write Inc starts at 9.00am sharp and if your child is late they will miss important parts of the lesson! •Only keep your child at home if they are really sick! When they are off of school they miss important sessions •Your child will bring home a variety of books – Please read with them as often as possible. If they are just learning to read words then use the pictures and talk about what they see •If you would like to help your child with their sounds and you are not sure of the correct sound you can hear all of the sounds pronounced correctly on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J2Ddf_0Om8&safe=active Or you can find this by putting into Google; Read Write Inc.
