United Nations Development Programme Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme SGP motto- “Acting Locally, Conserving Globally” SGP is offered in 73 countries

By providing financial and technical support to projects in developing countries that conserve and restore the natural world while enhancing well-being and livelihoods, the SGP demonstrates that community action can maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental imperatives. United Nations Development Programme Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme in Kazakhstan SGP Kazakhstan long-term objectives: To raise the capacities of local communities and NGO’s in Kazakhstan, in order to enable their full- fledged involvement in the environmental activities through equal partnership with all the related parties; To demonstrate the opportunities of addressing the environmental problems within the focal priorities of GEF/SGP on the local level through NGO’s and the local population by improving the social-economic conditions of local communities

NGO Farmer of Kazakhstan Foundation “Zhanartu” The basic aim of Zhanartu project is to rehabilitate biological diversity of tamarisk- wormwood-saltwort ecosystem on degraded overflow lands around Zhangeldy aul and to increase life-support level of LC members. To stop land degradation and to rehabilitate biodiversity of TWS ecosystems around the aul (1 pasture belt) through: reduction of grazing load by gradual transfer, starting from 1999, of young cattle, sheep and goat, horses and camels to the second and third pasture belts during pasture period; creation, starting from 2000, of lucerne plantations on irrigated land plots of LC members Project tasks: To increase ecological literacy of LC members through educational and technological seminars, seminar themes being connected with LC members’ activity under the project Project should based on real needs of local people

NGO “Remez” Society of ornithologists “Golden Eagle” The objective of the project is to develop and build an efficient model of conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable use of the golden eagle and other hunting and rare predatory birds’ populations alongside with the support and development of the Kazakh national hunting traditions. …………………………………….. ……………………………………... …………………………………… formation of the facilities for ecotourism development, coverage of Nura village and adjacent territories by tourist routes demonstrating national hunting traditions with the use of hunting birds, excursions to predatory birds’ habitats with the view of producing additional income by the local community; Project tasks: Each project should have component for financial sustainability

NGO “Ana Ymiti” Aral non-government health society “Energy created by wind ” The objective of the project is to provide sustainable supply of electric power to the most important maternal and surgery operations departments of the Maternity House of the Aralsk city using renewable source of energy of the wind power turbine (WPT-10). Financial input from granter = ownership&responsibility in 1 year

Strengthening the baseline component and the component of social-economic improvement at the project site; Active focus on strengthening the potential applicants will be based on a series of thematically related workshops and trainings to be provided by both GEF/SGP staff and within the capacity-building, monitoring and evaluation projects.
