Presentation transcript:

Zirconium By: Gabriela Tjandra 7.1 #9 Science

Basic Facts It is actually a metal ore Gray - ish white metal Also considered as rare earth Zirconium is not 100% metal ore but only part of it Its quite hard to find (part of rare earth) Melting Point: 2125 k (1851 c) Boiling Point: 4650 k (4376 c) Melbourne and South Africa (Biggest production of Zircon sand)

It’s Forms There are two types: Zirconium Cubical Ore Rare and Hard It has more value Rare as diamonds Mainly used for jewelry Artificially For watches or rings Zirconium Ore It is found with other minerals Magnetite Monazite (radio active) By using ‘gravity separation’ technology Used for (pure zirconium): MetallurgyCeramicGlaze

Zirconium Uses It is also used for nuclear energy Low absorption cross for neutrons Quite resistant to corrosion by the seawater and other acids and alkali Used by chemical industries Also used in day-to-day materials like: Getters in vacuum tubes Component in surgical appliances Photo flashbulbs

Zirconium Carbonate is used in poison ivy lotion Also combine with urushiol When zirconium merges with zinc, it becomes magnetic at a temperature below 35 k (-238 c) Zircon (zirconium oxide) can be formed into gemstones Zirconium combined with niobium would become a superconductive magnets in low temperature

Other Facts Zircon is a primary gemstone of zirconium Also known as: JargonHyacinthJacinthLiguria Wasn’t known to contain a new element until 1789 Impure oxide and zircon can be for laboratory appliances that withstand heat shock, furnace lining also by the glass and ceramic industries as refectory material
