EUROPEAN COOPERATION IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract COST Action TD1208 Electrical discharges with liquids for future applications Milorad M. Kuraica Studentski trg 12, Belgrade, Serbia Laboratory for Physics and Technology of Plasma University of Belgrade- Faculty of Physics Studied topics Development of plasma-liquid system based on dielectric barrier discharge (DBD): water falling film DBD reactor. In this reactor water/liquid is a part of the discharge electrode configuration and its interaction with atmospheric pressure plasma generated in different gases (air, N 2, O 2, He, Ar ) has been studied. (WG2) Diagnostics of water falling film DBD: - Electrical measurements and emission spectroscopy: analyses of influence of water film on electrical characteristics of the discharge and excited species in emission spectra. - Study of the active chemical species formation in liquid phase (O 3, OH, H 2 O 2, NO 2 -, NO 3 -, pH, conductivity, oxidation power). - Study of the discharge products in the gaseous phase with and without water film (FTIR, absorption spectroscopy, gas analyzer) Applications of water falling film DBD in water treatment, advanced oxidation processes, plasma- catalytic processes and biomedicine (WG4): - Degradation of phenols, chlorophenols, reactive textile dyes, pesticides, pharmaceutical compounds - Removal of arsenic from potable water - Inactivation of microorganisms in liquids - Exhaust gas treatment with plasma-assisted scrubbing Study of helium DBD plasma jet- a significant plasma source for biomedical applications and surface treatment. (WG2, WG4) Diagnostics of He plasma jet: - Electrical measurements - Spectroscopic measurement of electric field - Spatial distribution and time development of some excited species a) b) Water falling film DBD reactor a) side and b) top view photo He plasma jet Concentration of OH measured in water treated in different gases Space-time development of He 706 nm line Electric field development in plasma jet
