Husker Facts  The University of Nebraska in Lincoln is commonly referred to as UNL and was founded in It is the state's oldest and largest university and the flagship university of the University of Nebraska system.  The school mission: to "afford to the inhabitants of the state the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the various branches of literature, science, and the arts.  A “Classroom” of 76,000 students - was led by Physics Professor Tim Gay in the fall of 1999 when he presented a series of 45-second physics lessons to Nebraska football fans via Huskervision, the football stadium's giant video monitors.

Husker Facts Cont..  UNL has a wide variety of Academic Programs to choose from; such as Agricultural Sciences, Architecture, Business Administration, Engineering, Fine Arts, Family Sciences, Journalism, Nursing, Community Service and Teaching.  International Atmosphere - There were 1,525 international students and scholars at UNL for the fall semester of 1999, representing 111 countries.

Husker Facts Cont…  The School Song. "There Is No Place Like Nebraska" was composed by Capt. Dietrich M. Dirks and Lt. Harry L. Pecha of Company G of the ROTC.  Herbie Husker is the oldest current mascot of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's sports teams. Herbie was created by the artist, Dirk West, and first appeared on the cover of the Husker's media guide in 1974.

Husker Athletics  Nebraska's sports teams are nicknamed as the Cornhuskers (or simply the Huskers). They have 21 varsity teams that compete in 14 different sports, and participate in Division I NCAA as members of the Big Ten Conference.  National Championships – Five national championships in football, Eight national titles in men's gymnastics, Three in women's indoor track and field; as well as the women's volleyball championship in 1995 and  In football, the Huskers have had three Heisman Trophy winners: Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch, along with five national championship victories in 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997.

Husker Athletics Cont…  SURE-FIRE NEW YEAR'S DATE - Spend New Year's Day with the Cornhuskers. The Cornhuskers have appeared in 32 consecutive bowl games.  NO EMPTY SEATS - Memorial Stadium holds the ongoing record for sold-out football games; so far totaling more than 220.  On football Saturdays, the stadium becomes the third largest populated area of the entire state.

A Culture of Engagement Engagement at UNL expands connectedness to deal with broader issues at the community, state and global level.  The Joslyn Castle Institute for Sustainable Communities seeks to address issues of environmental concern in harmony with economic and social development.  The Character Counts campaign seeks to help young people acquire the pillars of character ­ caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness.  Scienceworks brings hand-on science activities to over 5,000 Nebraskans each year.

Notable Alumni As of 2012, 3 alumni have won the Nobel Prize, 8 have won the Pulitzer Prize, 22 have been selected as Rhodes Scholars, 1 has been selected as a Marshall Scholar, 29 have been selected as Goldwater Scholars and 15 have been selected as Truman Scholars.  George Wells Beadle - Nobel Prize-winning geneticist  Grace Abbott - 20th century feminist who championed the rights of the oppressed.  Aaron Douglas - Described as "the father of African-American art.“  Jim Thompson - Regarded one of the 20th century's most gifted writers  Jesse Stearns Buscher - The first woman member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
