Fossils are the remains, imprints, or traces of prehistoric organisms. Fossils have helped determine approximately when life first appeared, when plants.

March 4, 2009 AGENDA: 1 – Bellringer 2 – Review homework 3 - Powerpoint Presentation 4 – Review Key Topics HOMEWORK (Quiz tomorrow! You can use your notes): Quiz is on Section 15.1 ~ Cornell Notes ~ Vocabulary

VOCABULARY REVIEW 1.Fossil 2.Plate Tectonics 3.Paleontologist 4.Relative dating 5.Radiometric dating 6.Extinct 7.Geologic Time Scale 8.Pangaea 9.Continent 10.Country A.Theory that explains how continents move B.Estimated date based on location of fossil C.Entire species died off D.The original “super continent” E.Evidence of organism that lived a long time ago F.landmass G.Political regime H.Puts palenotological events in order I.Dating process using isotopes J.One who studies ancient organisms

How many billion years ago do scientists believe Earth formed?

Scientists believe Earth formed 4.6 Billion Years ago.

Inner Earth

Plate Movement

Continental Drift

Continental Drift & Plate Tectonics Early 20 th century: continents moved about the face of the Earth (Wegner used fossil evidence) Contradicted established views that the continents and oceans were permanent stationary features on the face of the Earth Current theory: Earth’s crust is broken into numerous plates that are in continual motion

Currently….

What is the difference between a continent & a country?

Continent = land Country = political regime

7 Continents 1.Antarctica 2.Australia 3.Africa 4.Asia 5.Europe 6.North America 7.South America

Ways to become Fossilized: 1.Permineralization & Petrification – organic tissues are replaced with minerals from the surrounding rock, including silica, calcite or pyrite. 2.Unaltered preservation - organism is preserved in its original state (example: trapped in tree sap) 3.Carbonization (Coalification) - removal of all but the carbon elements (hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are removed) 4.Trace & Molds - These fossils are the molds and casts of organisms which have dissolved or rotted away, leaving only a trace of their existence.

Fossilization Process 1.Death 2.Minerals from sediment seep into bone 3.Sediment covers body 4.More sediment covers & pressure compresses fossil 5.Extraction (fossil “discovered”)

Spontaneous Generation vs Biogenesis

Spontaneous Generation = living from non-living Biogenesis = living from living

Pasteurization His research proved biogenesis Process: liquid is heated to kill off microbes ~ milk ~ juice ~ cheese
