The average in the United States is 90 percent. Bridge Condition: Today, 86 percent of INDOT bridges are rated as Excellent, Good or Satisfactory. National bridge element condition rankings are unavailable. However, only 3.3 percent of INDOT bridges are rated as “Poor” condition according to FHWA national standards. Nationally, an overall average of 7 percent of bridges are rated as “Poor.” 2

What are previous INDOT activities regarding passenger rail? One of nine member states in the Midwest Regional Rail Initiative, an ongoing effort to develop and improve passenger rail in the Midwest, including high-speed rail service (80-110 mph) with shorter travel times. In partnership with the Illinois and Michigan DOTs and FRA, developed a project involving a Service NEPA environmental Assessment, Chicago- Detroit/Pontiac Rail Corridor Improvements from Chicago, Ill., to Pontiac, Mi. In partnership with FRA, Norfolk Southern and Amtrak, developed a Project for Intercity Passenger Rail Service Program for funding of the Indiana Rail Gateway Project, estimated to cost $71.4 million, would upgrade the NS Chicago-Cleveland line between Porter and the Indiana/Illinois state line. Project was selected for funding. 14

INDOT Office of Aviation Mission: The department shall encourage, foster, and assist in the development of aeronautics in this state and shall encourage the establishment of airports, landing fields, and other navigation facilities. 16

Responsibilities Develop Statewide Aviation System Plan (20 year) Strategic planning initiatives to foster the growth of the Indiana State Aviation System and develop process improvements for deliverables in areas of: Safety – Perform airport inspections and disseminate safety critical information to airports. Mobility – Maintain system that provides a maximum 30 minute drive to air travel for all Hoosiers. Economic Development – Continue to develop system of 5,001’ runways to accommodate business class aircraft. Coordination – Coordinate the development for freight delivery at major points throughout the state. Increase capacity at certain centers. 17
