Galatians 5:16 Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism Ron Merrymanpg 96 “Many Christians reverse the concept by saying or thinking: ‘If we suppress the flesh; if we try not to do fleshly works, then we will be spiritual.’ This attitude leads in turn to legalistic strictures in an effort to ‘hold down’ the flesh. THESE TOTALLY MISS THE POINT OF Gal. 5:16, which guarantees those fleshly lusts will not reach their goal or end only when the believer conducts his/her life in the Spirit!”
Galatians 5:18 Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism Ron Merrymanpg 99 “‘Flesh’ and ‘law’ are co-relative terms in this context: to be free from one is to be free from the other. Flesh is unaided human nature animated by evil principle: Law is the standard under which unaided human nature strives in vain. In salvation, man is freed from the cursing demands of the law because Christ bore totally the penalty thereof; moreover, the dominion of the sin nature is broken and man is brought through the Holy Spirit into new life that is animated by the very essence of Jesus Christ. The effect is such that the entire tenor of his actions and thought processes are then brought into the sphere of Holy Spirit influence and productivity. He is led or has the capacity of being led by the Spirit and as such needs not to be led by the law or to be under the law.”
