Author: Paul Recipients: Christians (“saints”) in Rome Date: A.D. Theme: Justification is based upon obedient faith in Jesus Christ. The gospel of Christ is God’s plan for man’s salvation and righteousness. Key Words: “righteousness,” “righteous,” “faith,” “law,” “sin,” “gospel,” “justifier/justification” Key Verses: 1:16-17; 3:23; 5:8; 6:23; 7:4; 12:1-2

Characteristics & Features of the Book: 1. “Third Mission Journey” Epistles 2. Divided “in half” 3. Didactic 4. Theological treatise 5. Lengthy introduction 6. Tremendously personal conclusion 7. Heavy use of the Old Testament 8. Future plans

Main Emphasis of the Book: The primary theme of the book of Romans is that justification is available to man only through obedient faith in Jesus Christ. The gospel of Christ is God’s plan (and only plan) for all men to obtain salvation from sins and to be accounted righteous in the eyes of God.

I. Obedient Faith Is Emphasized at the Beginning and End of the Book (Rom. 1:5; 16:26). II. Man’s Great Need for Salvation Is Emphasized By Underscoring the Pervasiveness of Sin (1:18-3:20). III. God’s Plan for Man Involves (and Requires) Justification By Faith in Jesus Christ (3:21-5:21). IV. God’s Plan for Justification Offers His Tremendous Blessings for All Mankind (6:1-11:36). V. God Provides Very Practical Ways in Which “The Just Shall Live By Faith” (12:1-15:13).

Author: Paul Recipients: “The churches of Galatia” Date: A.D. Theme: There is liberty in Christ. Christ delivers from the bondage of the old law and grants freedom in Him. Key Words: “liberty,” “free,” “law,” “faith,” “Christ,” “justified,” “bondage” Key Verses: 1:6-9, 12; 3:19-28; 4:4; 5:1

Characteristics & Features of the Book: 1. “Third Mission Journey” Epistles 2. Addressed to a group of churches in the province of Galatia 3. Sharp tone 4. Biographical information 5. Has been called by some, “The Magna Carta of Christian Liberty”

Main Emphasis of the Book: The primary theme of the book of Galatians is that true liberty is found only in Christ, but returning to the old law would place brethren under bondage again. Paul calls upon brethren to stand fast in the liberty of Christ.

I. Paul Strongly Emphasizes That There Is Only One Gospel (1:6-9). II. Paul Strongly Defends His Apostleship and Authority As an Apostle (1:10-2:21). III. Paul Strongly Contrasts “The Law” and “The Faith,” Emphasizing the Exclusive Nature of the Gospel (3:1- 4:31). IV. Paul Strongly Portrays the Practical Nature of Christian Liberty (5:1-6:18).
