Mental Health is a Major Public Health Issue The World Health Organization Global Burden of Disease study found mental disorders will be the leading cause of disability in the world by 2020

Did you know?  Half of all lifetime cases of mental illness start by age 14 40% of young people have had at least one psychiatric disorder by the time they are 16 22% of adolescents have a severe mental health problem at some point during their teen years

Did You Know?  Today more than 30 percent of college students receive mental health services at some time from counselors, psychologists or therapists, according to the American College Health Association’s National College Health Assessment

Suicide is the 3 rd leading cause of death in those years  Over 3 million youth are at risk for suicide each year– only 36% receive treatment  15 % of high school students report serious thoughts of killing themselves in the last year  The majority of teen suicide victims exhibit psychiatric symptoms for more than a year before their deaths

Over 30,000 Americans die by Suicide Each Year  Every 18 minutes someone in the U.S. dies by suicide  Every 19 minutes someone is left to make sense of it…

What is Mental Health?  Mental or emotional health generally refers to our thoughts, feelings and actions, particularly when faced with life’s challenges and stressors. Throughout our lives, mental health is the foundation of our thinking, communication, learning, emotional growth, resilience and self- esteem…

Mental Health First Aid  Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, MHFA is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis  12-hour training teaches 5-step action plan to better support family members, friends and others 10

Program Origins  Created in Australia in 2001  Founded at the University of Melbourne  Expanded to more than 17 countries, including Scotland, China, Canada, Finland, Singapore, Ireland, Wales, England, Cambodia, Japan, South Africa, Thailand and New Zealand

Program Origins  Introduced and piloted in the U.S. in 2008  WCCSTS participated in the pilot MHFA instructor training and were of the first trainers in the US 19

By the Numbers:  “The adult Mental Health First Aid program has already been delivered to nearly 100,000  Americans through a network of more than 2,500 instructors

MHFA in Washtenaw County 2008 to 2013  CSTS has provided over hour certification trainings to approximately 650 individuals  Audiences have included Students from WCC, University of Michigan, EMU, Concordia, Wayne State Counselors, instructors and other professional staff from our local colleges Families, consumers, peers, CSTS staff, other county staff, St. Joes, UM hospital staff 25

MHFA 12 hour Certification in Washtenaw County  Courses are held routinely during the WCC Mental Health Nursing Program orientation. We started to provide the training for student nurses in 2009 and about 100 students are trained per academic school year  WCC offers the 12 hr training through the Life Long Learning Department twice a year  There are CEUs provided for teachers, nurses and social workers 26

President Obama  “As part of his recommendations to protect our communities from gun violence, President Obama rightly called for Mental Health First Aid training to help teachers and staff recognize the signs of mental health disorders in young people and find them appropriate care.”  Research shows that the sooner people get help for mental health disorders, the more likely they are to have positive outcomes 28

President Obama  As the president stated, now is the time to bolster access to mental health care and improve public safety for all Americans. We urge you to include the Excellence in Mental Health Act in the multi-agency task force recommendations to the U.S. Congress.”  Support has also been growing for widespread Mental Health First Aid training for people of all ages. The Mental Health First Aid Higher Education Act (HR 5996) would provide the training to teachers, students, and campus staff in communities nationwide 29

What's New: Focus on Youth and MHFA  The youth version of Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training program to help citizens identify mental health problems in young people, connect youth with care, and safely deescalate crisis situations if needed  The program, focusing on youth ages 12 to 25, provides an ideal forum to engage communities in discussing the signs and symptoms of mental illness, the prevalence of mental health disorders, the effectiveness of treatment and how to engage troubled young people in services 30

How it Works Training Components  12-hour community program offered by instructors  5-day instructor certification training offered by the National Council, Missouri Department of Mental Health, and Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene

Upcoming Instructor Training Programs  If you are interested in attending a program, you must apply to attend an instructor trainingapply  June 10-14, 2013: Charlotte, NC  August 19-23, 2013: Milwaukee, WI  Tuition for the instructor course is $2,000 per person ($1,850 for National Council) includes all materials 32
