A STEP by STEP TUTORIAL FOR BEGINNING ARTISTS ORIGINAL GRAPHITE HORIZONTAL LANDSCAPE DRAWING BY: SANDEE BURGER

Materials Graphite Pencils (For this drawing I used a 0.5 mechanical pencil, F, HB, 4B, and 6B) Drawing Paper (I used Strathamore heavy weight paper) Blenders (I used two types; first a pencil blender from Prismacolor, second various size Tortillians.) Pencil Sharpener, Sand Paper, Eraser, and Prismacolor needed rubber.

Once you have chosen a theme or have visualized a design, you will then begin a light sketch to outline your scene. If you have an idea of what you want to compose go for it, if for some reason it changes mid-draft or mid-drawing, DO NOT sweat it, it happens to most of us. For this sample I decided landscape (perspective) was perfect. It gives you a chance to try and see objects as they truly are, multi-dimensional. 3 Dimensional Objects

The Background Authors Note: I personally like to start off with the background, for me it gives me a better perspective of the range, distance, and area I am working with. I start by drawing vertical lines of different lengths, boldness, and angels. During this process I am also added fluff by insert pines sporadically throughout. Next I sketch a simple image of a cabin. (The mood I was aiming for was along the lines of summer vacation, of spring break with family/friends) Fluffing

Next, I begin to use my bolder pencils to start adding depth, shadowing, and detail. Additionally, I begin working on the back right hand corner of the drawing. In these two images, I used a 4B pencil in addition to my mechanical pencil, as I was still in the works of creating the scene. Authors Note: Please excuse the lighting, I was working with both outside and inside light during composer and photographing as I went along.

Shading 1.I now begin to use my bolder line with the 6B pencil to create a better perspective of each object. 2.For example, the shadow under the dock can say many things to a viewer. (it can say what time of day it may be.) 3.Shadowing also helps separate the planks from the ropes. 4.In the distance, shading can give the viewer an idea of which trees are closer and which are further away. (It can even demonstrate how the rocks are stacked at an angle.) b.

Using various erasers to create multiple images which may not always be conveyed greatly with pencil. Creating a space in the water by using the kneaded rubber makes it easier to position the person landing in the water. Using a straight eraser also help when trying to create greenery in specific context.
