 Listen to the video: How the war was beganHow the war was began  Quiz tomorrow 16.3/16.4  Today, I will be able to explain why Abraham Lincoln was able to win the election of 1860, describe how the South reacted to Lincoln’s election victory, and identify the events that led to the outbreak of the Civil War.

 Lincoln: The Story of US Lincoln: The Story of US  Eventually there will be 4 candidates that run for president. The Democrat party will split into North and South.  Lincoln (IL) is selected over Seward (NY) for the Republican nomination. –No expansion of slavery  Douglas (IL) Northern Democrat, -Popular Sovereignty  Breckinridge (KY) Southern Democrat, (VP under Buchanan), in favor of slaveholder’s rights.  John Bell (TN) Constitutional Union, Large slaveholder, but against the expansion of slavery in the West.

 Lincoln is elected with no Southern support 6 November 1860  S.C. decides 9 November 1860 to meet 17 December to discussion secession  Buchanan in December 1860 issues a statement saying secession is unconstitutional  Many Southern states believe Lincoln is an abolitionist and begin withdrawing from the Union (Dec 1860 – June 1861)  February 1861: The Confederate States of America is founded, Jefferson Davis (MS) becomes President 22 Feb  Lincoln is sworn in 4 March 1861  12 April 1861 the Civil War begins at the battle of Fort Sumter (A Union loss)

 South Carolina December 20, 1860  Mississippi January 9, 1861  Florida January 10, 1861  Alabama January 11, 1861  Georgia January 19, 1861  Louisiana January 26, 1861  Texas February 1, 1861  Virginia April 17, 1861  Arkansas May 6, 1861  North Carolina May 20, 1861  Tennessee June 8, 1861

 States that had slavery but didn’t leave the Union.  Delaware  Maryland  Kentucky  Missouri

 2 goals: Preserve the Union and Avoid War  Lincoln does state that secession is “unconstitutional” _______________________________________________ _  It is true Lincoln was slow to act regarding the growing discontent of the South while serving as President-Elect (Nov 1860-March 1861). Lincoln thought that he had little authority to act and was reluctant to issue further statements regarding his position on slavery.

 12 April 1861 to 13 May 1865  1,100,000 American causalities  More than 3,000,000 Americans will participate in the Conflict  More than 600,000 people will die (more ppl than WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam)
