JUMP START You will need scissors and glue stick. Cut out the quote from the handout you were given and glue it on a new page in your notebook. Respond to the quote on the right side of the paper. Sam Houston’s Quote Your Response…what does he mean, what is he explaining, what is his opinion?

Thesis Development and Road Map Sam Houston’s made heroic decisions during Doc. ; however, his most heroic decision was ______. I believe this was most heroic because….(justify or defend your choice)

A Nation Divided Sectionalism – Excessive loyalty to one’s local section and issues Republican Party formed in 1854 – ultimate goal…to stop the western spread of slavery Tariff – tax placed on imported/exported goods (would benefit the North) Southerners depended upon foreign trade and slave labor States’ rights – the debate of how much power federal government should have

Presidential Election of 1860 Democratic Convention – erupts in debate over issue of slavery Southern delegates leaving in protest, but they nominate Stephen A. Douglas Those that left meet and nominate VP John C. Breckinridge Republican Convention – nominate Abraham Lincoln PREDICT – What will a split party do to the election?

Election of 1860 cont. Southerners threaten to secede if Republican is President. Constitutional Union Party – (Another new party! Goal-Keep Union together!) nominates John Bell Trying to keep any candidate from getting the votes (THINK SURVIVOR!) H.O.R. would choose the president

Election Results Texans voted in great numbers for Breckenridge. Bell received some votes and Douglas received even fewer votes. Lincoln did not receive any in TEXAS as his name was not on the ballot. Lincoln wins the Northern vote and becomes #16.

Reaction to Lincoln South Carolina secedes announcing, “The Union is dissolved.” Within 6 wks, 5 other states join to create the CSA (Confederate States of America). Texans ask for a convention to discuss secession, but Houston says NO. Houston tries to call special meeting of legislature, but they override him.

Secession Convention of TX Delegates vote to adopt an ordinance of secession 166 to 8. Most Texan citizens vote in support of it. Constitution was changed to the CSA. Texas secession became official March 2, (7 th state to secede) Houston refuses to take the oath w/the governor’s seat declared vacant.

EXIT TICKET Was Houston’s decision professional or unprofessional? Why or why not?
