The Election 1. President: Andrew Johnson__ Number 17 VP - None 2. Political Party Democrat 3. Term of Office _ Who came before and after him, and what were their Political parties? Abraham Lincoln (Republican ) preceded him and Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) followed him. 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. Lincoln had chosen Johnson as his VP as a conciliatory move approaching the end of the war. Andrew Johnson had remained in the Senate as a pro-Union Southern Democrat. As part of the plan to assassinate Pres. Lincoln co-conspirator George Atzerodt had been assigned the task of killing Andrew Johnson, but lost his nerve. So Johnson survived the assassination and succeeded Pres. Lincoln on April 15 th 1865.
